April Memoranda

I forgot to mention last night when we got home I listened to the radio and about 10:00 we heard Crown Prince Olaf of Norway speak. He talked a bit in Norwegian and it was so nice to hear. I'm glad I'm Norwegian! I'm proud of it - very. Well this space is really for a review of the month of April but somehow this month isn't very outstanding. I always think so much is going to happen and so very little does. Perhaps if I don't expect too much, well we shall see. My plans for the month of May, the merry month of May, I should say consist of less dreaming and more doing -

The month of May is going to be used to find a career I'd like to follow and the furthering of that career. I'm also going to lose at least 10 pounds of weight because I'm definitely losing my figure that I've always been rather proud of and now is the time I need it most. My work at the office leaves me feeling so tired and drown out that all I can think of is coming home and relaxing in an easy chair with some good reading matter. However, that will never do because I've got to develop my personality this month too - I've got a lot to strive for - anyway it sounds good -

April 30, 1939 Sunday

April 30, 1939 Sunday

Ev Came for me and we went up there for dinner and after that we drove down to the shore. I wonder if this year will be like last with me going down the Seiberts practically every weekend? Well anyway we went over to Jessie's and I met Marcel her new boyfriend - he seems nice. Then Ginny who was down at her cottage joined Ev and I and we went down the beach took a few pictures then we walked up to Dunnings Store talked to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis who are back from Florida and had this store opened. We had sodas and cookies. Then back and sat in the sun for awhile until it was time to go. Drove home through Hartford where we could see all the beautiful daffodils on the Aetna Bank and etc.

April 29, 1939 Saturday

Had an awful morning! more darn work! Went with Karin and Evelyn to Embassy and saw "Dark Victory"with Bette Davis and George Brent. It was so marvelous! and sad! I cried and sniffled something terrible! So did everyone else! After our usual visit to Contaris I went home and had supper. Ann K. and Betty came down and I asked Ann about N.Y. and work there. The reason I wanted to know was because I decided definitely today to have a career! The only trouble is I just don't know what line of work I want to take up. Modeling? Dress Designing? Acting? I don't know. I've got to take steps toward seeing what I have talent for. I really mean this!

April 28, 1939 Friday

April 28, 1939 Friday

Mom and Pop went to Yale College with Mr. and Mrs. Jensen to hear the Norwegian Student singers from Norway. Karin came down here to walk with me to meeting. She is all excited about this Ray. She said she was in love with him and he with her. She got her license today and that made something else for her to be excited about. She said Ray was coming to meeting tonight to get her and we could meet him. However, he came along in the car and picked us up. I didn't get much of a look at him and he seems like a nice fellow. He took us to Noa's and Karin came in for a minute. We had a nice meeting. Left early got a ride with Dotty and Eddie who were going to the carnival.

April 27, 1939 Thursday

Eunice came up for supper tonight. She brought magazines for Ruthie and a box of candy for the rest. No wonder all the kids love her. After supper Mom and Pop went out and we washed the dishes and cleaned up things. Marit and I made Eunice up - put on loads of lipstick, powder, rouge, and stuff and gee she looked swell. We had a nice time - had coffee and cookies in the good old way. Eunice and Pete are quite serious she tells me. I'm glad because I think he's just the type for her. She left about 11:30. Mom won a dollar at Bingo and was she proud! Well that's all I guess, anyway all I can think of.

April 26, 1939 Wednesday

Well I don't have to go to the dentist again at least I hope. I went tonight and had the last treatment. It cost me $4.50 counting Ruthie's extraction and thats very reasonable. I had visions of ten, fifteen dollars. Am I glad! Got home rather late had supper (of course why do I bother even mention it?) and called Karin who was quite her normal self once more. Ray is coming down to see her tonight. Couldn't get the car last night. Well thats that. I hope she remembers our heart to heart talk last night and doesn't get too over confident in her self. Its not good!

April 25, 1939 Tuesday

April 25, 1939 Tuesday

Ginny and I met Karin in the Contaris, Karin said Ray might be up for supper anyway but if he did come he wouldn't be there until 8:30 so I finally agreed. After supper we talked and also jumped rope outside (more fun). We then went upstairs and Karin showed me some of the notes she had gotten from Ray. She certainly seems to like them. Karin got dressed and we sat and waited for the darn boy to come but he didn't. We went for a walk and we noticed this coupe driving slowly by. We thought it might be Ray so we went back to the house but it hadn't been him so we walked back to the Drug Store again and had cokes and smokes and talked. Karin asked it I minded her gibbering to me and I said "No, as long as I feel you only gibbering and not gloating". Oh she said she'd never do that! Anyway we're a lot better friends!

April 24, 1939 Monday

April 24, 1939 Monday

Well what did I do today? I'll have to think it over. I know I washed my hair tonight and I did my nails and of course I listened to the Lux Radio Theatre. Robert Taylor with Frances Dee and Gail Patrick in "Broadway Bill". Need I say it was good? No? No! Oh heavens I can't think of anything more. Oh yes now I remember after work I went up to the Library and got some books. Didn't find any good ones but I'll know better when I've read them. I want to get some good books but I think I'll have to get them at a lending library.

April 23, 1939 Sunday

April 23, 1939 Sunday

Ev called at 8:30 this morning (unearthly hour) and asked if I would like to go riding with them. So of course I said yes and she said be ready by 9:30. I hurried, took a bath, breakfasted, and was ready when they came. We drove North and up through Mass and into Vermont. When we started it was a beautiful day sunshiny and warm but further north we got the cloudier and colder it got and of course we had on our spring clothes brrr - covered ourselves with a blanket and managed to be quite cozy. It started to rain and later on we ran into a snow storm! Imagine and here it is nearly May. It was very beautiful white snow on the fir trees etc. We went way up to Bennington Vt. - Then home again -

4.22.2012

April 22, 1939 Saturday

April 22, 1939 Saturday

Well lets see what shall I start with? I'll just skip over the fact that we worked this morning. The dance last night seems to have been a big success. I'm glad but sorry Ginny and I couldn't go. I met Karin, Ev, and Ginny at the Embassy and we saw "The Castles" with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers also "The Saint Strikes Back" with Barrie and George Sanders. Later we went to the Contaris and Mrs. Jensen came in to tell us that Ivar has gotten a job as assistant Principal in Rockville Jr. High School. Home to finish "The Citadel" by A.J. Cronin and Mr. and Mrs. Jensen came down. I washed Ruthie and fixed her hair and then went to bed. Don't I have fun?!

4.21.2012

April 21, 1939 Friday

April 21, 1939 Friday

Tonight is the Russell and Erwin and Helve dance and I'm not going. Dot, Noa, and Ev are all going. Ginny and I aren't and of course Karin is busy tonight. I sat home and read then I ironed some clothes and listened to the radio. Rachel came down for awhile and we talked. No wonder I'm just an old stick in the mud without a date to my name. How can I meet anyone sitting home all the time! I'm better looking than Karin darn it but she's the one that gets around! Well I think I better get started but the trouble is I don't know how or where to start! I think I better work out a plan on "How to Become a Belle in 10 Easy Lessons". Only for me they wouldn't be so easy!

4.20.2012

April 20, 1939 Thursday

April 20, 1939 Thursday

Ginny and I met Karin downtown. It's getting to be a habit! She got the pictures. They're rather good. Karin came home with me for supper and I made sandwiches and Marit made frosting for the cake. Of course I set the table myself and the sandwiches. Karin always makes herself scarce when there's anything to be done. She's all excited about this Ray fellow she met in the office. She's having him and another couple up tomorrow night. Ev washed her hair so she didn't think she could come but I persuaded her and finally she took the car and came down. Things were very dull and they left early as most of them are going to the dance tomorrow night and they want to look their best.

April 19, 1939 Wednesday

April 19, 1939 Wednesday

Worked overtime tonight in fact the whole Statistical Department did. I don't know what to write about just doesn't seem to be anything too exciting happening around here now. I'm having meeting tomorrow night. I'm meeting Karin downtown again so I can finally see the pictures and then she will come back home with me and stay for meeting. I've got my nails to do and my face to wash but somehow I wish I had something more exciting to do. I wish I had some money to pay my insurance, my dentist, and a few more details. Oh well the time will come when I will be perfectly filthy with money (I hope) oh well maybe.

4.18.2012

April 18, 1939 Tuesday

April 18, 1939 Tuesday

Ginny and I went downtown to meet Karin. She was going to get the pictures we took Easter but they weren't ready. Karin was all thrilled over this new boy at the office. She really does get an awful lot of enjoyment out of life. Some of it is, of course, a pose but then aren't we all "put on" more or less? She came up for supper and after supper we read the old notes she sent me in Jr. High School and Senior High. We laughed until we were weak! Then we reminisced and laughed some more. All in all we had a very good time. I'm glad she came. Well now it's time for bed 10:30 and I'm practically ready ain't it wunnerful?

4.17.2012

April 17, 1939 Monday

April 17, 1939 Monday

Let's see what did I do today? I worked today part of the time at my own work and in the afternoon I worked at me old job posting - Betty M. and I exchanged because she is learning my work so she can do it during vacation time or something - Well that's for that. After my bath tonight I washed my hair and put it up. Betty K. came doown from the farm to see Marit she's going to stay overnight and go back tomorrow. Mother and Rachel went to see "Three Smart Girls Grow Up" tonight. I've been reading "Citadel" by Cronin. I forgot his first name. I'm very interested in it. I don't see as I've done anything else. My what an entertaining day I've had oh well I shouldn't complain,  I'm healthy.

4.16.2012

April 16, 1939, Sunday

April 16, 1939, Sunday

I had planned to go to Church this morning but I didn't wake up in time. Busied myself around the house read the Sunday papers and rather enjoyed myself. Karin called and asked me if I wanted to go to the movies. I didn't especially but I said I'd go so we went to the Strand and saw "Midnight" with Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche. It was one of those sophisticated comedies and funny all the way through. After the show we went into Contaris and had orangeades (our figures of course!). Then Karin took the bus home and I walked. While in the Strand ladies room a girl came in with a suit just like Karin's! I really think it's a shame and I can sincerely empathize with her.

4.15.2012

April 15, 1939 Saturday

April 15, 1939 Saturday

Ginny, Ev, and I went to the Embassy this afternoon and saw Deanna Durbin, Nan Gray, and Helen Parrish in "Three Smart Girls Grow Up". I liked it immensely. I love those sister pictures. Then I came home and Karin called. She said she would be down to see me (because Mom and Pop were up there and so were the Christophersons so she wanted to get out of the house) unless something interesting came up. She called a little later to say Bud had asked her out so she wouldn't be coming and I don't blame her I'd go to! Ruthie and I were home alone - Marit went to stay with Elaine Marys baby while they went to a party. Ruthie went to bed  and I ironed and washed and fooled around. It is now 1:15 A.M. and the folks aren't home yet. Lawrence came home and he's in bed. Karin dropped by for a minute - wanted me to go for a ride of course I didn't - I was all ready for bed!

4.14.2012

April 14, 1939 Friday

April 14, 1939 Friday

I got paid today but as usual I don't know where it all went to. Some how my money just doesn't seem to stay with me. Oh well "help business along" thats my motto and how I live up to it! Ev and I went to hear the Berlin Choral group concert with Anna Kaskas tonight. She was marvelous! Beautiful Contralto voice. She was dressed in a plain white gown and wore white flowers on it and a wristlet of white flowers. She had very blonde hair combed page-boy and she made a very good appearance. Ginny sang in the chorus and she looked like a doll! Shes got a new blue gown and she really was the sweetest of the whole bunch!

4.13.2012

April 13, 1939 Thursday

April 13, 1939 Thursday

Worked again tonight until quarter after six and then Marit and I went up and got my blue dress - cost me 75 cents and she did a very nice job of it. Mom went out to play Bingo. We joke so much about her Bingo playing. Came home and listened to the radio - seems to be my next to favorite sport - favorite indoor sport being reading. I'm going to a concert tomorrow night with Ev. Ginny is singing in it but what makes it even more interesting Anna Kaskas is going to sing too and shes quite famous. Well I've got some skirts to press and a face to wash and two hands to scrub clean but there nuff sed.

4.12.2012

April 12, 1939 Wednesday

April 12, 1939 Wednesday

Today was Paps birthday. He was fifty one years old! Or should I say is I bought him a shirt and we had cake with one candle on it. I had to work until quarter after seven six (more darn mistakes) and after I had supper Marit and I went to Mrs Vase with my blue dress. The hem was crooked and there were other slight alterations to be done. Then I came home to take a bath and Mom hadn't put the water over and Rachel was downstairs so she asked me up and said I could bath up then because she had loads of hot water so I did and then came down and was washed my hair. Pretty good when we have to bathe up on the 3rd floor.

4.11.2012

April 11, 1939, Tuesday

April 11, 1939, Tuesday

I went to the dentist at 4:30 and didn't get out until 10 minutes to 7. He said I may have to come only once more. Oh I hope so! I wonder if I'll have enough money to pay him then, Well I'm not going to worry about that now. Mom and Rachel went to the movies so Ruthie, Ann Marie and I did the dishes after I had finished supper. Time goes so fast. I'm now listening to Fibber McGee and its nearly 10:00 and I've still loads to do. I'm glad Rachel has moved upstairs because I think she and Mom will get on. It's nice for Mom to get out to the movies but its pouring so hard out hope she doesn't get caught in it.

4.10.2012

April 10, 1939, Monday

April 10, 1939, Monday

I've been reading "Edna His Wife" ever since I got home tonight only stopping to eat and listen to the Lux Radio Theatre. I wouldn't have listened except for the fact that Errol Flynn was in it. Ever since "Dodge City" he's been my favorite star. Sigh! Of course thats only temporary and no one knows better than I. I might add Brian Aherne and Jackie Cooper played with him and the play was "The Life of A Bengal Lancer" It was good which isn't unusual. Then I sat up until 11:30 and finished my book. I liked it but its rather pathetic, I mean Edna is. Well I finally got to bed with a slight headache from too much reading.

4.09.2012

April 9, 1939, Sunday

Easter Sunday

April 9, 1939, Sunday

It was snowing hard when we woke this morning. It looked more like Christmas morning then Easter! I got Karl up out of bed so he could drive us to church. The effort tired me for the rest of the day he doesn't like to miss his morning sleep not that I blame him! I wore my new blue hat with veil, navy reefer coat and shoes, navy gloves and bag, white scarf and my new blue (lighter blue) dress. I felt as if I looked nice - maybe I did. Sat in Church with Karl, Odd, and Ivar and they drove me home. After dinner Ginny came up and we walked up to Karin's house where we stayed the rest of the day had supper there and oh yes we took pictures of us in our Easter Clothes. I'll keep my finger's crossed! After church the weather cleared up a little cold but lovely.

4.08.2012

April 8, 1939, Saturday

April 8, 1939, Saturday

Marit and I helped clean house this morning and then I went with her to look for a suit and hat and shoes. We went to practically every store there was but Marit just couldn't find a thing she wanted. I had to meet the girls in the movies at 2:00 so I took Marit with me and we met them and saw "Dodge City" with Errol Flynn (oh hes wonderful) and Olivia De Haviland. It was so very good. Then after the movies we went around again and Karin came with us to a few stores but it got to be too much for her so she wanted Marit after she'd finally found a jacket to get the rest by herself while I went home with her for supper. When I wouldn't consent she went off in a huff and Marit and I continued with no success finally we decided to go home and eat and Marit would take Mary Voss with her and look for shoes and hat. Later Rachel and Ann Marie and Junior were here from Brooklyn when we came Marit got her hat and shoes with Marr.

4.07.2012

April 7, 1939, Friday

Good Friday
April 7, 1939, Friday

I slept late and was it marvelous. I washed my hair last night so I didn't have to worry about that. Ev called up and wanted me to go shopping with her and have supper and stay for F.Y.P. meeting. So I arranged to meet her about 2:30 but first I went up to Birnbaums and tried on dresses. There were two I couldn't chose between a dressy blue crepe and a candy pink polka dot silk. They were both adorable so I took them both. Got two pairs of stockings. Feel rich. Met Ev and we got her gloves and my shoes blue pumps cute. Then we went to look at hats and I got a blue one with a huge veil. I love veils, gives you that misty look. Ev got a blue hat too looks good on her. Had supper and meeting. Karin didn't come and neither did Noa but we had a good time.

4.06.2012

April 6, 1939, Thursday

April 6, 1939, Thursday

Ruthie's birthday today, Mom and I chipped together bought her a Mickey Mouse wrist watch. She had a cake of course and lots of other presents.

Oh oh what a day this has been! Olga and I had a showdown! Finally! This morning it seems I did something that wasn't right, I still don't understand what I did but she bawled me out plenty and made me feel like something under a stone. I told Janie about it going down to the bank and once I'd gotten if off my chest I felt better about it and I decided I wouldn't hold a grudge against Olga and I'd just laugh it off the way I've done in the past when she's been a crank. However in the afternoon I ventured a timed remark about what I'd done and she turned on me and said I'd been very rude blah blah so I let loose and told her just what I thought of her and that I wasn't going to stand for her talking to me the way she has and I certainly told her plenty! She didn't say anything and I kept to myself and did only the work I thought I should and didn't ask about anything! She got sweeter as the day went on but I just ignored her. It started to pour so I walked in the pouring rain up to Birnbaums to look at some dresses. Why who should come in but Olga she spoke first and later she called me over to see the gown she was buying to be bridesmaid at her brother's wedding in. She really looked lovely and I admired it and then I went and said goodbye and she said sweetly goodbye Inkie. One thing I'm not being a doormat anymore.

4.05.2012

April 5, 1939, Wednesday

April 5, 1939, Wednesday

I worked overtime tonight as we had so much work to do. Marked quite a pile of orders too. Then I rushed home, ate supper, and caught the 7:00 bus up to Karin's. She was still in bed when I came but she didn't seem so very sick. Dave was there too but he didn't stay long. He doesn't interest me anymore, but he's nice. I probably should be interested. I don't know when it  comes to me I'm a total loss I just don't know what I like or what I don't like. I'm afraid I'm looking for an ideal that doesn't exist. Karin and I had a rather nice if quiet visit and I left about 10:15.

4.04.2012

April 4, 1939 Tuesday

April 4, 1939 Tuesday

I had my tooth treated again but I have still more treatments to go ... I still don't know how much he's going to charge. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Ruthie had her tooth pulled poor darling shes quite miserable. She always gets sick when she has a tooth pulled. Karin wanted me to come up tonight but somehow I just couldn't drag myself up there so I promised to come up or go up??? Tomorrow night. Hope she gets well soon. How terrible it is to have to stay home sick. Well guess thats all I can think of.

4.03.2012

April 3, 1939, Monday

April 3, 1939, Monday

I should have worked tonight but didn't as I was going to the dentist. Ruthie went with me as her tooths been bothering her. He wasn't in however so I might just as well have worked. I'm going back tomorrow. Hope I get it all over with then. Also hope he doesn't charge too much. We shall see. I pressed a few skirts helped Mom with the dishes and etc. I'm afraid I haven't done anything very spectacular today but then I don't anyway not that I'm complaining. Oh no I feel fine- I feel wonderful I feel swell! Started "Edna, his Wife" by Margaret Barner - I don't seem to be able to get interested in it yet -

4.02.2012

April 2, 1939, Sunday

April 2, 1939, Sunday

Well I've had a quiet but cozy Sunday today. Slept late, helped clean house, had dinner and later Mom made waffles and coffee and we enjoyed ourselves wonderfully. Called Karin only to find that she is sick in bed with a cold. I know she wasn't so well on Friday. Hope she gets better soon. I finished reading "American Family" by Faith Baldwin. Good but I thought it ran rather slowly. Listened to Don Ameches hour with Clark McCarthy of course and so fourth. I considered planning my Easter wardrobe but didn't get around to it. Oh well the time will come -

4.01.2012

April 1, 1939, Saturday

April 1, 1939, Saturday

Well here it is the beginning of a new month and I won't complain of a thing. I've got my health and as long as I've got that anything is possible. Went to work this morning and worked hard. It's about time I did I guess. After dinner Ginny, Ev, and I went to the Strand and saw Cafe Society with Fred MacMurray and Madelene Carroll who is the most beautiful thing ever. The picture was good although not exceptional. After supper and speaking of supper I can't seem to stop eating today - well anyway I washed some underwear and a couple of sweaters and my hair. Now to put my hair up and get my beauty sleep - no cracks please -
