Memoranda 1939

On this page I will sum up what I can of the years happenings and etc. Starting with the F.Y.P. Ginny's engagement to John Hartmen, Ev and Art going steady, Noa and Dick Blackburn going steady, Dot and Irving have an understanding, Karin dropped out of the F.Y.P. and going with "Steve" (not steady).
Me - well who cares?
Now the Family. Karl still single (I guess). Marit being dated and getting very pretty and popular as well. Lawrence still a kid but growing and possessing a good sense of humor. Ruth also getting very pretty and I suppose it won't be long before she'll be growing up and stepping out. Mom and Pop still healthy and good-looking.

"I'm not going to keep a diary of 1940 so this will be the last diary writing I do for a long time. Well goodbye 1939 and Hello 1940.

New Years Eve

As I am writing this it is almost 1:00 o'clock! The new year has been with us one whole hour. Welcome 1940 and may you bring nothing but peace and happiness to all. And P.S. don't let me spend next year at home - please. Mom, Dad, and I went up to Rachel's and had cocktails and lunch and saw the New Year in there. Ruth and Lawrence were next door taking care of Joanne and Marit is out serving for Mrs. Sunel. We Gjerpen girls are funny we both had chances to go out but preferred our own ideas. Not that I wouldn't go out if it had been some one I cared about. I'm not making resolutions (I think) but here's to a new year!

December 30, 1939 Saturday

I silently cursed every and anyone who had anything to do with my having to get up and go to work this A.M. It was snowing and looked very peaceful so I felt better after that. When I got to work I felt real good and very silly. Fun. Ginny came home and had dinner with us and then we went to the movies, saw "Four WIves" with Lane Sisters and Gale Page, Jeffrey Lynn, Eddie Albert, and same cast as 4 Daughters. Very very good. After movies to Contaris where I had the last Sundae I'm going to have for a long time. Gee do I have to spend New Years Eve home this year too? I'm getting a little worried. Joke.

December 29, 1939 Friday

I went home with Ginny and had supper there. The plan originally was to go on from there to Noa's for meeting but we got word that Noa was sick so Ginny had meeting instead. We went over to see Ev and her mother for awhile. Ev had sinus trouble and her mother heart trouble. I hope they will soon be better. There were only three of us at meeting Dot, Ginny, and I. Ginny isn't doing anything special New Year's Eve but Dot is going to New York with Irving. I bet they have a wonderful time. Ginny she thinks they will be married shortly after Easter! That's wonderful of course but heavens what a drastic step! Still what's the use of waiting too long? Irv. took us home. He seems nice I wish we knew these F.Y.P. fellows better.

December 28, 1939 Thursday

Called Ev up and she's feeling better but not well enough to come to meeting tomorrow night. I didn't think she would. She got a robe from Art for Christmas. Marit's gone skating. If I had a jacket I believe I would have joined her. As I sit here writing this the Xmas tree is all lit up and it's so pretty it makes me feel sad somehow it signifies so much. A year past a year coming enough of this or I'll be sobbing on my own shoulder! Bill B called up and asked me to go out New Years Eve but I told him I had a date. Somehow ----

December 27, 1939 Wednesday

I'm so sleepy these days I guess I haven't gotten over the Christmas Shopping rush yet! I really have been planning to get to bed early but oh well there's plenty of time for sleep. Ruthie went to Mrs. Jensen's today and wore her new blue Taffeta I gave her for Christmas, she looks like an angel in it. Ivar took them home and he dropped in here for a moment and they stayed to have a bite with us. All were very friendly and nice. Mrs. J gave Ruthie a pair of pajamas. Cute on her. I washed my hair and did my nails before I went to bed.

December 26, 1939 Tuesday

Up and to work again today and back into the harness. Sleepy but still I love it. I'd hate to be so lazy I didn't care about work. Not of course that I don't get tired of it at times. Went up to see Rachel when I got home tonight and she asked me if I couldn't get Mom to let Ruthie with her and Ann Marie and Jr. to see Mrs. Jensen. Mom said no but I won her over. Mom went to play Bingo and won $2.50. Not bad for a nights work! I washed Ruthie's hair (also Ruthie) and got my things ready for work. Talked to Noa for awhile she's going to a dance tomorrow.

"Christmas Day"

Somehow it doesn't seem possible that Christmas Day is really here! Karl and a friend came home and I  presume they had had a very exciting night or morning I should say. I've got to list a few of the things I got for Xmas. From Mom a Satin blouse and kid gloves. From Marit a satin girdle (I wanted one). From Lawrence a bottle of Helena Rubinstein's Jasmine Cologne just like the kind he broke months ago - the angel. Dad gave me a pair of slippers. Karl's present hasn't arrived yet and I don't know what it is. Eunice gave me Helena Rubinstein's Apple Blossom Cologne and a pr of stockings. From Karin a darling bracelet and from the Karlsen's a small cedar chest for odds and ends. From Ruthie a bra. I guess that's all. Our tree is so pretty gee it's wonderful.

"Christmas Eve"

All year long I've waited so has everyone else I imagine and here it is Christmas Eve! Karin dropped in for a moment to deliver presents for Marit and Me. I got her to drive me up to Eunice's house with Eunice's present. When K was trying to turn around she caught her car bumper on the wheels of a parked car and it took three boys to help us get out of the mess. We stopped at Noa's for a moment then home. We had a delicious supper and the Karlsen's came down and we opened our presents, Karl called the names. We got so many lovely things and it was such a nice Christmas! They get better and better and that's the way it should be.

December 23, 1939 Saturday

"Last Shopping Day"

Noa called up and asked me to go to the movies with her and seeing as I can't say "no" I said "yes". We saw Joan Bennett in "The Housekeepers Daughter". It was very silly but entertaining enough. I went shopping after the movies and did I shop! I did Karl's as well as my own. I got Karl 2 shirts and a tie. Hope he likes them. Oh yes I also did quite a bit of Dad's shopping. I almost didn't get home I was so burdened with packages. Then I wrapt them up and I was so tired when I got through I just tumbled into bed.

F.Y.P. Christmas Party

Ev didn't come to our last party because of sickness and ditto this year. She has sinus trouble! Karl and I got Lawrence's bicycle tonight. It cost more than I expected but it's a bueat! Red with lights and very streamlined. They'll deliver it tomorrow. We stopped for Noa and Karl left us off at Ginny's. We collected her and then went over to Ev's. She was in bed and I gave her her pajamas and she gave Noa her present. We left her and then to Dot's where we opened our presents. Ginny had my name and gave me a lovely slip. Hazel gave us our lunch and gosh what a Xmas present that way. Ge that girl can cook! Sky took us home. Nice to see him.

Department Christmas Party

Oh so much fun. We had dinner in the Empire - downstairs in the banquet room. I had lobster and very good too. There was a banquet going on when we came in and we joined them later in singing carols - later we went shopping and I got a beautiful robe. It was mean't for a gift but now I don't know, it's so pretty maybe I'll keep it. Next we went to Helen's and had a very enjoyable time. Just our Dept. and Ann and Miss Bancroft. I gave out the gifts under the tree, Betty Miller had my name and I got a lovely black bag. Helen got up a delicious lunch. We got home rather late but had some cards to write so I wrote them!

December 20, 1939 Wednesday

December 20, 1939 Wednesday

I went downtown this noon and bought heaps of Christmas cards. Also got a pair of darling blue scuffies for Karin. I came home tonight and went up to Rachel's to fix her hair with that self permanent stuff. While waiting for her I wrote most of my cards out. Then I did her hair but we had to wait 4 hrs before the curlers could be removed so in the meantime I washed my hair and took a bath so that's done. Took out the curlers in Rachel's hair and while it isn't straight it's not terribly curly. Looks better though.

December 19, 1939 Tuesday

"The world is so full of a number of things. That I think we should all be as happy as kings". Just a poem I heard and quite true but when you analyze it, Are kings happy? Here's the news for today, we bowled our opposing team and won! I got a score of 85. It was so exciting. Eunice came up to supper and later Karl drove us down to pick out a Christmas tree. We got a very lovely tree and Eunice helped us to trim it. Eunice brought us some Xmas presents and we put them under the tree. I'm beginning to feel more and more as if Christmas is really on the way.

December 18, 1939 Monday

December 18, 1939 Monday

I hurried downtown tonight and got the Hartford bus. Karin met me at the station. We had to take another bus and got there finally. They have a nice place but it's not the same as on Brighton Street. We had a nice supper and K and I gabbed or hours. Althea came down and took us to the "Mark Twain Diner" where we had a cocktail. K and I went back and talked for hours. Karin's views have changes very much since last we talked. She made a remark that's pretty typical of her new idea, she said, "The F.Y.P.'s were too conventional!". I don't know! Maybe we are a bit. I only hope she doesn't get too unconventional. Her new friends seem a bit wild!

December 17, 1939 Sunday

December 17, 1939 Sunday

I didn't think I could get up and go to church this morning but once I got up it wasn't bad. To my surprise Dot was sitting there when I came into church. Marit, Mary Vase, and I went to the movies in the afternoon and saw Loretta Young and David Niven in "Eternally Yours". Very Good. Karin called up after supper and said she might drop in for a moment but at any rate she asked me to meet her in Hartford tomorrow. I agreed, I've got more shopping anyway. I've got a hunch Mrs. J wants to give me presents for the kids or at least Ruthie.

December 16, 1939 Saturday

December 16, 1939 Saturday

Got up around 10 and hurried around until 11:00. I decided to get the 11:15 bus and went up on the corner waited about 5 min and saw it coming and then it turned up the st. before the corner I was waiting on. Was I flabbergasted. I ran downtown and got the 11:30 bus just as it was pulling out. Met Noa and we shopped for hours got package after package after package. We had a good dinner in the Empire. Noa called Dick up and he came and took us home. I wrapt up all the packages and they all look so very pretty. It's very late now and I'm tired oh very tired.

December 15, 1939 Friday

December 15, 1939 Friday

I tried on more dresses both this noon and night and couldn't find a thing. I decided I'd better go to Hartford so tomorrow I'm going to meet Noa and we;re going shopping. I had meeting tonight. It was originally planned that Dotty would have it but we're having the Christmas Party next week and she asked to have it so we rearranged our plans. We drew names for our grab bag and I got Ev's. We talked and fooled around as usual. Really had fun. It's a lot different than it used to be but still nice. I took a bath and washed my hair before they came.

December 14, 1939 Thursday

December 14, 1939 Thursday

Our Banquet Tonight. I wore my black dress and pearls and didn't look too bad. Betty Miller andI went into the Casino (where we had our banquet) and I had a martini and she a rum and coke. We took them with us to our tables and I didn't drink all of mine. The table looked so pretty and I had the Turkey dinner and it was delicious. We had a minstrel show and it was a scream. Everyone enjoyed themselves and later other people came in and we danced to the nickelodeon. I had a Cuban Libre and only drank half, Ginny the other half. She had about 4 of them but never showed it. All in all our banquet was a huge success.

December 13, 1939 Wednesday

December 13, 1939 Wednesday

Rained today veddy veddy much. Marit met me in Parkers and I tried on dresses. One I liked very much but it was black, also 19.95. I think I'd better get a colored dress. Marion asked me to go with her to a basketball game but I didn't think I'd go. I did though and am I glad! I've never seen such an exciting game. New Britain Machine against American (indecipherable word). The score was tied at the end of the game and they played overtime. N.B.M. won. I'm hoarse from cheering. Donald took us home. I see where I'll have to go to more of the games.

December 12, 1939 Tuesday

December 12, 1939 Tuesday

Bowling after work as usual. Score 84 and 67. Our team is tied with Olga's as we're going to have a final game sometimes to determine who gets the prize. Home and had supper and were confined to the kitchen and Laurie's bedroom for the evening as Marit had her Sub Deb Club here for meeting. Ruthie, Laurie, and I played crossword Lexicon on the bed and had loads of fun. Karin was to call me tonight but didn't, well probably something came up and she couldn't. I still haven't got my dress for the banquet Thursday!

12.11.2012

December 11, 1939 Monday

December 11, 1939 Monday

I met Marit after work and we went dress shopping. Up to Birnbaums and tried on dress after dress but couldn't find any we liked. Down to the other Birnbaum where Marit found one she liked but the color wasn't right so we're going to send for one in blue. She doesn't know it's Karl's present yet. Home and had supper and washed my hair while listening to Lux Radio Theatre. Very good. Kay Francis, Carole Lombard, and Cary Grant. Gosh Xmas is so near and I haven't got my cards or all my presents yet and I do want a dress.

12.10.2012

December 10, 1939 Sunday

December 10, 1939 Sunday

I got up (and really I didn't feel much like it) I went to Church. I'm really getting very good. It must be that it's so close to Christmas. Home and Mr. Nelson is here. He stayed for dinner. Mom made a cake and Marit and I on the verge of going to the movies when who should come by but Mrs. Forjusen and a young man, hem! He couldn't stay very long but Mr. and Mrs. Karlsen and Jr. came down. Mr. couldn't stay for coffee but Rachel and Family did and we had a cozy time. Rachel gave me a list of what she wanted for Xmas so I can figure those things out. Oh how I love Christmas.

December 9, 1939 Saturday

December 9, 1939 Saturday

Woke up at 9:00 this A.M. and went back to sleep until about 11:30. It was wonderful! Noa called and wanted to go to the movies. We saw "Ninotchka" with Greta Garbo and Melyvn Douglas. She was good. Him too. Noa and I had ice cream in Eleanor Mae's and did a little shopping. She left me and I did a lot of shopping. Bought Ruthy a darling blue Taffeta dress with red velvet bows. Marit a tea rose slip, bra and panties, also a red sweater from Mom. Bought Dad a muffler and sundry other articles. Home and Ruthie and I got them all wrapt and put away. Karl and I are going to get Lawrence a bicycle I believe, whew and I'm broke now!

12.08.2012

December 8, 1939 Friday

December 8, 1939 Friday

Very windy today. I went down to the bank and opened another Christmas Club one for me and one for Mom at $100.00 each. It's cold today in fact it was so cold I rather dreaded going to meeting. Karl gave me some money to buy Marit a dress with. I took Marit shopping with me and we tried to find a dress for her but no success. Home and called Ginny and who should answer but John. He said he's "Give her hell if it was anyone else!". Karl drove me up  and Eve, Ginny, and I had meeting. Dot went out to dinner with her dept. and Noa to a party. John came up later and Ginny and he took me home for which I was very grateful - so cold -

December 7, 1939 Thursday

December 7, 1939 Thursday

Directly home after work to find Mom in the midst of writing letters and cards. We got Pop to write some this noon much to my surprise. Mom got a letter from Ingrid Moseby today. She enclosed a picture of Aunt Anna and Uncle. Aunty looks like Mom. It's fun getting letters like that and I hope we get a lot of letters. Listened to the radio as usual. Just now we're all interested in "I Love A Mystery" it's so mysterious! I've got to make out my Christmas List soon. I really have news! We're going to get a bonus 1/3 years pay at 5% which will get me about $9.00 which is better than nothing.

12.06.2012

December 6, 1939 Wednesday

December 6, 1939 Wednesday

Mom wanted me to buy some Christmas Cards so she could send them to Norway so I went straight downtown after work and went through all the stores until I got the nicest ones. Mom went to play Bingo tonight and when Pop came home was he sore! Marit's girl friend Dot came up for awhile. She's a cute little thing. Reminds me of our Dotty somewhat. I fussed around and didn't get to bed until late. It looks so nice down town now. The streets are all lit up and so pretty. I'm sure we're going to have a wonderful Christmas I hope.

12.05.2012

December 5, 1939 Tuesday

December 5, 1939 Tuesday

I couldn't go bowling tonight because of my finger so I hurried home and took a bath and washed my hair and had supper, Noa called and I asked her up. I decided to call Karin up. I haven't seen or heard anything of her for ages. She was surprised to hear it was me and we had quite a talk. She won't be coming to anymore F.Y.P. meetings she said she doesn't have to come and be treated like an alien and at first her heart was hurt but not now and as far as she's concerned it's all over. She wants to see me though and was glad I called said she'd been afraid to call up or come see me for fear I'd be just as cold as the rest. Well maybe it's just as well I don't know it seems rather ironic after all these years though. Noa came up and we practiced exercises and had loads of fun. Well that's all.

12.04.2012

December 4, 1939 Monday

December 4, 1939 Monday

Marit met me after work and we went shopping first. I wanted to get a dress for Ruthie but I couldn't find one I liked. I think I better take Mom with me next time. I bought Mom a flannel nightgown for Xmas and then Marit and I went to the Strand and saw "Disputed Passage" with Dorothy Lamour and John Howard and Akim Tamaroff. Very good. Co Feature the Ritz Brothers and Jane WIthers Okay. Home and had supper and listened to Bob Burns and Anita Louise in "A Man To Remember" on Lux Radio Theatre, very good. To bed and Marit and I exchanged ideas on what we want for Christmas until late into that night.

12.03.2012

December 3, 1939 Sunday

December 3, 1939 Sunday

I feel better now. I let myself go and had a good cry before. I guess anyone can guess why. I'm just sick and tired of sitting home night after night never going to dances, never having dates, and the fun and gaiety that all young people should have. The payoff is of course having Marit going out and talking about this "cute boy" and that "cute boy"! I'm not jealous of Marit, that would be dumb and I'm too fond of her to feel that way. It's just that I'm hurt and puzzled to find myself in a rut like this. I try to be sweet about it and pretend I don't mind sitting home while my kid sister steps out but underneath even though I hate to admit it to myself I want to hide somewhere and cry my eyes out. Gee I'm a fool!

12.02.2012

December 2, 1939 Saturday

December 2, 1939 Saturday

It's been raining all day and not much doing. I called up Ginny and she's feeling better and then I called Ev, she has laryngitis but she's better too. I helped Mom a bit and then I sat and soaked my finger (it's still numb) and read and read. Marit worked today so I haven't seen much of her. I got together with Ruthy and we decided to go downtown in the rain and buy a few Xmas presents. Stopped in and saw Marit for a minute and then went on. Ruthie got most of her presents and when we got home we wrapped them. Karl got a letter from Carl today - He and Marius are in New Orleans and coming to Philadelphia. Gee I hope we can see them!

December 1, 1939 Friday

December 1, 1939 Friday

I'm writing this on Dec. 2. It was hard to get up this morning but I made it and even enjoyed it after awhile. I started for work this afternoon humming under my breath and feeling just wonderful. Just as I reached the corner of Winter and Clark the accident happened! I was rushing along and swung my hand into the fence. My ring caught on the wire and pulled me backward. The agony was terrible! I hardly know how I got to work and when I did my finger was terribly swollen. I went to the nurse and she wasn't there but Mrs. Berg helped me soak it and when the nurse came I soaked it some more and tried to get the ring off but it wasn't any use. Mrs. Scott was afraid that I had fractured my finger and suggested that I go to the doctor with it - she bandages it up and put a splint on it. I went to the Flanagan and when I went up in the elevator the boy gazed at my finger with great respect and sympathy in his eyes. The doc filed off my ring I thought it was going to kill me it hurt so. Said he didn't believe it was broken but of course took the bandage off also took two bucks! The ELevator boy congratulated me on my freedom of bandage and I thanked him and he asked how long I had worn it and I couldn't say oh about 15 minutes and lose his respect so I said only a short while and got by that way. Ginny sick and Ev ditto so Noa had Dot and I up to see her new gown and fuss.

November Memoranda 1939

Thanksgiving Day for America and over in Europe Russia started an undeclared war on Finland. A dirty rotten thing to do to such a fine honest little country as Finland. Russia has bombed quite a few places and killed many people mostly women and children the cowards! Oh what a horrible thing to have happen and now everyone is speculating on whether Russia will try for Sweden and Norway after her war with little Finland. I hate those dictators all they can think of is power and more power. I'm thankful, so thankful we're here in America!

November 30, 1939 Thursday

Thanksgiving Day

November 30, 1939 Thursday

It was so nice I could sleep in this morning. Marit and Lawrence went to the Football Game last of the season. N.B. won 14-0. Buckley was the opposer. I would have loved to have seen the game because it was a lovely day but not any of the girls were going so I stayed home and helped Mom instead. We didn't have any company but had a wonderful dinner. A Huge Turkey and so good and I ate and ate! Now I'm sure I have to go on a diet! Marit went out with Anita's brother Norman and his Aunt and Uncle to a wedding reception. Marit is all grown up and looks as if she's going to do better than her sister.

November 29, 1939 Wednesday

November 29, 1939 Wednesday

Day before Thanksgiving and I woke with the thought that tomorrow morning I can sleep. Oh wonderful wonderful. We got paid this morning so of course I went down to the bank. Went into Mohicans tonight and saw Marit in her white uniform at the Bakery counter. Bought a mince pie and started home. Met Mom who sent me shopping for her. She came home later after buying the turkey and good things to go with it. Oh glory! Tomorrow is the day and am I going to eat! I won't even think of my figure!!

November 28, 1939 Tuesday

November 28, 1939 Tuesday

Well bowling again tonight and we had so much fun but my score was very poor it was 68 and 64 or close to it. When I came home I washed my hair and took a bath and even did my nails. I don't believe I got all three of those things done in one night and still gone to bed early in ages but I done it! I can hardly wait until we have our turkey and everything. Thanksgiving dinner num num. Heck here I am thinking about my stomach again! I've really got to go on a diet right after Thanksgiving, of course after...

November 27, 1939 Monday

November 27, 1939 Monday

Marit went to the movies with Ginny and I and we saw "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" with Jean Arthur and James Stewart. The co-feature was terrible. When we came home the Lux Radio Show was on with Brain Ahearn and Jean Arthur (what again?). It was Pygmalion I guess thats the way it's spelled. It was very good both picture and play. Gosh. only a couple days to Thanksgiving and I think we people living in America have a lot to be thankful for. I'm so glad there is no war or fear of war here in the good old U.S.A. I only wish it were the same the world over.

November 26, 1939 Sunday

November 26, 1939 Sunday

We slept late and Ginny even later than I. She's very hard to get up in the morning so I just lay there for half an hour until she was fully awakened and then we got up and had breakfast. Ginny and her parents were going to a meeting of some sort and Mrs. Gibney asked me along but I knew Ginny was going to meet John later and of course would rather see him alone so I called up Ev instead and we decided to go riding. We rode around for awhile but I got feeling rather car sick so we didn't go very far. Stopped at Dutchland farms and had a hot dog and orangeade then home.

November 25, 1939 Saturday

November 25, 1939 Saturday

I slept rather late and got up and cleaned about the house a bit. I waited and waited for Ev to call me to go to the movies with her but no phone so I called her only to fine she and Ginny had left for the movies. They knew I wanted to see the Embassy show and Ev had seen it and so figured I wouldn't want to go with them. I rushed and got down there and found them and saw "Marx Bros. at the Circus" and "Three Sons" Okay. Ginny asked me to go home with her so I did. We had supper and then to pep things up we decided to take pictures in the house. We put on Evening gowns and fixed a lot of lights around but I'm doubtful about it. I stayed overnight with Ginny.

November 24, 1939 Friday

November 24, 1939 Friday

Noa had meeting tonight. Ginny went to a dance tonight so of course she wasn't present. I walked up and found Noa busy putting the finishing touches to some candy she had made. She got ready and the girls came. We were very bust talking in fact so bust we forgot about eating until almost 10 o'clock. Dotty had the car so she took me home. The F.Y.P. get smaller and smaller but only temporarily I hope. Gosh I wish something very exciting and very amusing would happen because I strongly suspect I'm not getting all the fun out of life I should have!

November 23, 1939 Thursday

November 23, 1939 Thursday

Didn't feel very well today got sick last night but managed to get home and through the day okay. Mom's gone to Bingo with Karl paying expenses. Karl incidentally gave me $15.00 on the loan I made him a while back. I've been listening to the radio, I don't know what I'd do without it. We're going to have meeting at Noa's tomorrow night. I haven't heard from Karin lately although she said she would write. I guess she's really out of the F.Y.P. I'm wondering about Ginny I wish I knew John better so I knew more about what she's getting into but all I can do is hope for the best.

November 22, 1939 Wednesday

I've been aching to see Bette Davis and finally I called Marit up and asked her if she'd like to go with me and so arranged to meet her in front of the office. I decided I wanted a new hat so before we went to the movies we went into the Marcelle and I tried on hats and finally bought a $3.98 hat and got it for $2.98 on account of it was Wed. It's cute, black soft felt with a soft leather band with a bucket in front of it. I've never seen Bette Davis so homely but her acting certainly can't be beat. Errol Flynn was okay but he doesn't appeal to me as before.

November 21, 1939 Tuesday

November 21, 1939 Tuesday

We had so much fun bowling tonight. We got very silly and cheered everybody on. I didn't do very well but I was out of the fifties anyway. First string 67 and second 76. I wanted to go to the movies tonight but no one could go so I came home but I'm still anxious to see Bette Davis. Pause while I wash my hair. It's all done now and I've got it all up in bobby pins. Bob Hope is on. He's funny. Gosh I don't know who's having meeting this week. Ginny is going to a dance Fri. so we might have to have it on Thurs. if at all. Had to buy a pr. of stockings this noon. Every time I think I'm a little ahead of the game that happens.

November 20, 1939 Monday

November 20, 1939 Monday

Ginny wore her engagement ring into the office today and surprised most everyone. She still seems too young to get married but I suppose she knows best how she feels and I'm sure she'll make a very good wife. We had R & E Girls Club supper tonight and a very long business meeting went with the supper. It wasn't over until late so I went home instead of to the movies and listened to Lux R.T. instead and very good it was too. "Goody Mr. Chips" with Lawrence Olivier who really startled me he was that good and with him Edna Best. Now I can go to bed and it's only 10:00!

November 19, 1939 Sunday

November 19, 1939 Sunday

I've just finished trying to audit the R & E Girls Club books and outside of a few petty errors and those just in misplacement they're Okey. I went riding with Ev and her mother and father today. We drove over all the new parkways, well maybe not quite all but quite a few of them anyway and they were lovely. We stopped at the "Swiss Cartte" they call it and had dinner. The waiters were running around in short velvet pants and regular swiss costumes. They have wonderful food and our waiter told us the chef once worked for the Czar of Russia. I've got my fingers crossed on that one. Ev and I took our pictures.

November 18, 1939 Saturday

November 18, 1939 Saturday

I slept late. Ruthie's in bed sick and has been all day. I don't know whats the matter with her but she has a fever and sore throat. I was supposed to have gone to the movies with Ev this afternoon and now I wish I had but instead I stayed home and cleaned house and listened to the Hartford N.B. football game with N.B. winning 20-0. Marit is working today in Mohicans again. - It's Sunday night but I think I'll fill this page up even if I am very tired and ready for bed. Ev, Ginny, and I are going to the movies Mon. night and see Bette Davis in her latest pic. I can hardly wait - she's so good.

Ginny's Engaged!

November 17, 1939 Friday

Every day since Wednesday when Ginny got her ring she's been dying to show it to everybody but not until tonight at meeting did she. Karin called up but I wasn't in and she left a message saying she wouldn't be coming to meeting? Well if she isn't interested in the F.Y.P. anymore thats her misfortune. No one noticed Ginny's diamond and I can't say as I blame them she kept it shielded  pretty well and it wasn't until we were ready to eat that she showed it and it's beautiful and I only hope she'll be very happy. The girls were all surprised in fact very surprised. I had a big cake and bon bons and made a party out of it.

November 16, 1939 Thursday

November 16, 1939 Thursday

Still no news from K.H. but I'm still hoping. I've washed my hair and I'm about to take a bath and I've got to hurry. I've got all my clothes ready for tomorrow. Been listening to the radio and etc. Been up to Rachel's and played with Jr. but Rachel and I were talking some more about Norway and etc and gosh I'd love to go over there for awhile anyway and I guess it won't be long before I do go on account of I'm saving like fury. Well now to go to bed and get my beauty sleep --

November 15, 1939 Wednesday

November 15, 1939 Wednesday

I didn't feel very much like going out tonight and neither did Marit. But after supper Lawrence, Marit, and I went down to Mrs. Anderson's new house. She insisted that we come and even set a date so we had to go. We had a nice visit, played Chinese Checkers and had Pineapple upside-down cake. We stayed later than we planned but we had a very nice time. We haven't heard a word from Karl Herrman and although I'd like to see him and have him here in our home, but if he's such a stubborn cuss just like the rest of the Gjerpens I'm sure he won't come.

11.14.2012

November 14, 1939 Tuesday

November 14, 1939 Tuesday

Went bowling again tonight and my scores were 82 and 74 which is better than I usually get. Mom wrote a letter to K.H. and sent it Special Delivery so we should hear from him if he's worth hearing from. I really think Uncle Hans would like us to go back to Norway after all Dad is his only brother living. I think I would like it but of course one never knows! Well Rachel seems to think I would and I really feel as if thats where I belong. Now another day is over and I'm so very tired I've just got to get to bed!

11.13.2012

November 13, 1939 Monday

November 13, 1939 Monday

The girls in the office all wanted to hear about my cousin so I said the little I could without really saying anything. I had hoped Mom would get a telephone call from him but no one had called. At least he could call the way he promised to do! Ginny and I went to see Deanna Durbin in "First Love" and it was wonderful. Deanna's grown up now and so sweet. The co-feature had Basel in it and Sigrid Gurie "rio" was the name of it and I didn't care much for it. I stopped in at I stopped in at Michael's and got my dinner plate from the nice salesman (They only gave me eleven).

11.12.2012

November 12, 1939 Sunday

November 12, 1939 Sunday

Slept until after noon as we didn't get to sleep until 4:00 this morning and we came home without K.H. who absolutely refused to go with us and so that is that. Mom feels very bad about it and so does Pop now that it's too late. Well I guess we have to take the bad with the good and that's what Mom does and trust her to see the humorous side of it! I stayed in all afternoon and fixed my new dress and played with Junior. He's more and more getting into my heart. No one in his right mind could help but love that sweet little darling.

11.11.2012

November 11, 1939 Saturday

November 11, 1939 Saturday

I don't know what to write, I'm so heartsick I can't even cry. We got up early and the painters came and finished their work. Mom and Dad and I and Ruthie and Lawrence worked like beavers until we had the house looking grand and all in order. Then the phone rang and it was our cousin and he couldn't come because he was expecting an important telegram from Norway so Mom unsuspecting soul suggested that we go to Boston and talk to him so he was delighted at that plan and it ended up with Karl, Pop, and I going. We met him and the captain who is very nice. K.H. isn't very good looking but he's nice enough. Well Pop got feeling good and brought up the old trouble about uncle Hans and he - and poof that was that!

11.10.2012

November 10, 1939 Friday

November 10, 1939 Friday

I had lunch downtown again this noon and went shopping afterwards. Bought a plant, some beautiful Artificial Flowers and on the way home tonight stopped at Birnbaums and got a peach bathmat and etc. We worked like the dickens and the home looks lovely. All done except the washroom which they will do tomorrow morning. Marit, Ruthie, and I took baths upstairs in Rachel's house. The floor in our bathroom isn't dry enough yet. What a busy life we lead up with the seen and to bed early in the morning. Well anyhow the house looks wonderful and we've got draperies in the dining room and a new rug and gee it's wunnerful!

11.09.2012

November 9, 1939 Thursday

November 9, 1939 Thursday

I got up quarter after six this morning because the painters were coming at seven. When I woke it was snowing! Of course soon as the sun came up the snow disappeared. We ate breakfast in the dining room we're getting real ritzy! I had lunch downtown and met mother and we went over to Michaels where that nice looking clerk waited on us. We bought a 12 piece dinner set plain white with gold edge and very rich looking I think. This is will be Karl and my Christmas gift to Mom. Well it's worth it we'll have everything all fixed up for our cousin when he comes to see us. I don't see how the painters are ever going to get finished by Sat! Ginny told me a secret, she and John have picked out their engagement ring and wedding ring!

11.08.2012

November 8, 1939 Wednesday

November 8, 1939 Wednesday

Another girl told me something no one else knows so far. She's leaving her job, got a gov't position in Washington. I think I'd like to do something like that. Be on my own for awhile anyway. We've been so busy tonight, Marit cleaned the Living Room extra special and it looks grand. I bought a bedroom lamp for Mom's room and other small articles, tie rack etc. The painters are coming tomorrow at 7:00 am so that means we'll have to get up an 1/2 hr earlier and I'm going to take a sandwich with me to work so I won't have to come home noon hour. Well I better get some sleep now if I can. I'm so excited!

11.07.2012

November 7, 1939 Tuesday

November 7, 1939 Tuesday

Why do people always confide their inner most secrets to me? I must have an honest face or something!  Betty A. told me today she is getting married very shortly! In fact all they need is a rent!! No one knows not even her family - Just me! I'm so glad but I'll hate to lose her she's such a peppy person and so much fun but I want her to be happy. The man from the bank and a painter looked at the house today and they're going to start papering Thursday! I think that's wonderful news. It needs it so badly. Mom and I went up to Birnbaum's tonight and bought new living room curtains, new white chenille bedspread for her room and new bureau scarfs. It looks smokey! I'm in heaven!

11.06.2012

November 6, 1939 Monday

November 6, 1939 Monday

Mother went to the bank and asked if we could have the kitchen papered and painted but they said or he said no it couldn't be done before next week but Mom kept insisting, said we were going to have company and etc until he consented to come up and take a look at it anyway. I went downtown after work and did a bit of shopping all for this house. Gee this is what I've wanted for so long! Go get the folks interested enough so that they clean and buy new stuff. It's wonderful! I cleaned Mom's closet and  put up bars and at the same time listened to Lux Radio Theatre with Barbara Stanwyck and George (sigh) Brent. The play "Only Yesterday" very good.

November 5, 1939 Sunday

November 5, 1939 Sunday

I was awaked (I can't write straight!) awakened by the ringing of the phone and I don't know whether it was Mom or just a voice in my mind that shouted Carl Herrman!  Well whatever it was I almost fell on my face making a hairpin curve out of my room and into the dining room to the phone.  The rest were just starting to get up and with trembling hands I lifted the phone and the operator said, "Your call from New York is coming through.  Do you want to take it?"  And I said, "Oh yes, thank you."  And then he said, "Hello." And I said, "Hello, is this Carl Gjerpen?" (Dumb question)  And he said, "Yes" and I said, "this is your cousin Ingrid," and he said in Norwegian, "oh is it?" and then we talked but for the life of me I can't remember about what and then Pop was up and he talked to him and then Mom got her chance and he's going to Boston but he'll be up next Saturday and I'm so excited.  Oh Gee how wonderful!

11.04.2012

November 4, 1939 Saturday

November 4, 1939 Saturday

Oh I've got such exciting thrilling news for today.  Mother woke me up and showed me a letter Dad had received posted from the Norweigan American Steamship Line.  Of course we were eaten up with curiosity to find out who it was from and seeing as how Dad was working we couldn't open his mail so I called him up and Mom, at his request, opened the letter and read it to him.  And here's the news!  Carl Hans Gjerpen, son of Hans, the boat owner in in N.Y. and stopping at the Pennsylvania Hotel!  He wasn't sure of our address so asked us to write him.  We decided to call him up after seven tonight.  Went to the movies this afternoon with Ginny and Ev and after went over to Mags where I bought a new dress blue tailored!  I'm home and I called New York but I couldn't get ahold of him!  The operator said she would have him call me.  Oh I'm so excited and thrilled and so is everyone.  The payoff is Karl is in N.Y. seeing the N. Dame-Army game.

P.S. Saw Ingrid Bergman and Leslie Howard in Intermezzo.  I liked it.

November 3, 1939 Friday

November 3, 1939 Friday

Pay day - Goody! Goody! How I love it but I would love it even more if my profits were slightly enlarged, oh well! I hurried home tonight and got dressed (ditto last night) Odd called to tell me Karin couldn't afford to come tonight as she's heavily in debt as it is and etc. Ev called for me and we went to the Avon Old Farms where I had a lobster dinner- Good. Dotty wore her new skunk jacket and in fact a whole new outfit and looked stunning. The girls all looked nice in fact. Noa, Ginny, and I had a martini before dinner and we felt so lightheaded and gay! It was fun and we just rode around after the dinner and then home.

11.02.2012

November 2, 1939 Thursday

November 2, 1939 Thursday

Dotty, Ginny, and I talked it over in work today and I was elected to call Karin and tell her about Fri night. Gee - tomorrow - well she wasn't home and I had to give Odd the message. I got dressed up, if you can call my black with pearls dressed up! I walked down town and met the girls and we drove up to Betty A.'s house. Ann and her mother were already there. We had run and coke and I do not - absolutely do not like them! We had a nice time and presented Janie with her gifts: Pajamas, silk stockings, and a blouse. Cute. We left rather early but I didn't get to bed until late.

11.01.2012

November 1, 1939 Wednesday

November 1, 1939 Wednesday

I washed my hair - big news item isn't it? I really can't for the life of me think of anything special that happened today. We listened to the radio and that's about all I can think of. I wish winter would come and it would snow because I love it so. We're thinking about going up to Vermont some weekend this winter seeing as we don't have work Saturday mornings. We could make it a real weekend. What fun to go skiing and wouldn't I be a flop as a skier? I've only been once!

10.31.2012

October 31, 1939 Tuesday

October 31, 1939 Tuesday

Halloween and so what!?! It's pouring to beat the band outside so the costume parade had to be postponed (until next year I suppose). We went bowling tonight and I as usual played my customary rotten game! My scores were 56 ouch and 60 something now I'm not sure but I think it was 67. I'm rather disgusted my pretty cellophane umbrella has a huge hole in it. A woman jabbed the spokes of her umbrella through it I don't think she even knew she did it. Oh well what's an umbrella in my young life. Ginny wore her new red work dress with cork buttons today she looked adorable - Now to my bath and go to bed -

10.30.2012

October 30, 1939 Monday

October 30, 1939 Monday

On the way home tonight it rained and rained hard! Of course not having a hat on little Ingrid got her head wet to say nothing of herself! Went up to see Annmarie who was supposed to be sick but I guess she had pretty well recovered at any rate she was playing hide and seek with Ruthie and Sophie. Junior was very glad to see me and showed me all his picture books well it seemed like all! He loves company and I love him the darling. I've been listening to Lux radio. Loretta Young and Miriam Hopkins in "The Old Maid" Not as good as the picture of course, but interesting --

October 29, 1939 Sunday

October 29, 1939 Sunday

The usual morning and then Ev called up to say Noa wasn't going driving with us but she hadn't called Ginny yet and maybe she would go. She told me Noa got a 17 jewel Bullava watch from Dick for her birthday and wasn't that nice. Noa called up and confirmed the report. After dinner Ginny, Ev, and I went riding. Fun! We stopped at Foglemarks for a Turkey dinner and then drove home. Got into NB about 6:45 and Ev left Ginny and I off downtown and we went to the movies and saw "Hollywood Cascade" with Alice Faye and Don Ameche, Alan Marshall - Very Good. Lawrence tried shaving today for first time and cut his lips and also scraped his cheeks and can't grow up soon enough.

10.28.2012

October 28, 1939 Saturday

October 28, 1939 Saturday

I helped mom clean the house and etc. Decided to pay my insurance which of course leaves a big hole in my savings. Oh to be a millionaire -- Well thats that! Bill called and wanted a date tonight but I told him I'd be busy. Wish I were (but not with him). Met Ev and Noa in the movies and we saw Pat Lane and James Cagney in "The Roaring Twenties". Oh, Noa and I went shopping but I couldn't find a single dress I liked so I didn't get a thing. Home to supper and sat and read and finally so tired I went to bed. Marit's gone to a Halloween party. Hope she has a nice time.

10.27.2012

October 27, 1939 Friday

October 27, 1939 Friday

Here we had our plans all made to go to the Avon Old Farms tonight and what happens?! There was such a dense fog out Ev was afraid to take the car so we had meeting at Noa's instead! Oh this is good. I came home to find Lawrence all alone fixing the Electric Clock. I warned him he shouldn't fuss with it and started to get ready to go out. I was in the bathroom washing when all of a sudden out go the lights and I am left in complete darkness! Lawrence had blown a fuse! I sent him after a couple and the two of us went down into the cellar and put in a new one - well he got the clock fixed anyway! Fun at meeting Noa and I set the table. *Just piled the food and everything else on great big spoons, huge knives, mixed cups, and saucers some fun --

10.26.2012

October 26, 1939 Thursday

October 26, 1939 Thursday

I didn't feel very well this morning but I went to work however I stayed home in the afternoon. Sat in the big chair with a blanket wrapped securely around me and felt a lot better. Junior came down to see me and I had him on my lap and we had a chat about the "boyes peway footbawl" on the street, he's such a cute baby. Eunice came up for supper and we had a nice chat and she told me she met John and Ginny at a Lodge meeting and she thinks John is very nice and there going to a dance together - still -

October 25, 1939 Wednesday

October 25, 1939 Wednesday

Oh dear these days I have to work overtime! I don't like them. Can't seem to get anything done when I get home. Just about got my hair washed. Got sick tonight so I feel low and miserable but thats to be expected. So sleepy can't keep my eyes open.Yawn ---
I hope we have a good time Friday. Oh I'm sure we will, it's been ages since I've been out to dinner so even if no one else enjoys it I will. Just imagine the F.Y.P. has held together together for Four years and here's hoping it will hold for many more years --.

10.24.2012

October 24, 1939 Tuesday

October 24, 1939 Tuesday

Went bowling after work. We played Betty M.'s team. My score is getting better (I think). My first string was 88 but my second was only 62. After the games were over I went up to Noa's. She had the card table set up in the front room and candles on the table. It looked so sweet and we had a good dinner. Noa eats better these days and looks better too and I think that's Dick's influence. We sat and discussed boys and life in general. She wants me to try and get a job in Hartford. I'd rather like to. She walked me down the street, we were going to see the jitterbugs dancing on the streets celebrating the fixing of main street but we were too late -

10.23.2012

October 23, 1939 Monday

October 23, 1939 Monday

Blue Monday only not so blue. Of course we had to work overtime and I do not like to work overtime! Am now waiting for Lux Radio Theatre to put on their play. Ah there it is! "Invitation to Happiness" with Fred McMurray and Madeline Carroll- sounds good I hope.

Yes it was very good. I like her voice. She seems like such a real person somehow. Oh gee I've got to take my bath and stuff and I'm so tired I wanna go to bed --- Read in the papers where Noa's house was on fire last night. The papers said it started from the house next door and quite a lot of damage. Well I'm glad things all okay.

10.22.2012

October 22, 1939 Sunday

October 22, 1939 Sunday

Had a lovely Sunday. Helped around the house in the morning and then after dinner read the funnies and papers until Noa called and said Ev was calling for me. The two of them showed up shortly after and we went riding. Drove thru Hartford and by Karin's new home and thru Windsor Locks and saw where Dick lives. We stopped at the Dutchland Farms on the way home and had a couple of Hot dogs and a coke. It was so much fun and got home in time for supper. I then read some more, listened to the radio, and etc etc.

10.21.2012

October 21, 1939 Saturday

October 21, 1939 Saturday

I've been waiting so long for today to appear. Karl drove me up to Dotty's (I had her coat with me) I was the first one there! Hard to believe. Ginny and Ev appeared shortly after and Noa followed them and lastly Karin drove up in Ivar's Oldsmobile. Everyone was dressed so cute. Ev had a new black woolen dress and Ginny new shoes. Karin new blue corduroy suit. We really looked like a lovely bunch of girls. After the luncheon which was delicious and birthday cake ditto we had our pictures taken. K had to leave so she didn't get in them (pictures I mean). We sat and discussed men and clothes - (The Women) Later on Noa confided in me she was self conscious etc.

10.20.2012

October 20, 1939 Friday

October 20, 1939 Friday

Seems strange not to have meeting this Fri. Ginny and I having nothing else to do decided to go to the movies. I'm glad we did because we saw an immensely interesting and entertaining picture. We saw Ginger Rogers, Walter Connelly, and Tim Holt in "Fifth Avenue Girl". The pictures I've been seeing lately are awfully good also a picture called "Torpedoed". It's an old release and the "Royal Oak" English ship that was just  torpedoed was loaned for the picture and in the picture was torpedoed showing what amazing coincidences happen!

10.19.2012

October 19, 1939 Thursday

October 19, 1939 Thursday

I did quite a bit of shopping done tonight. Dot and I bought a yellow sweater for Ginny. After Dotty left me I bought a pair of shoes and a new suede bag, both black. Also got some small accessories and went after my dress at the cleaners. It's after 10:00 now and Mom is playing Bingo, Ruthy in bed, and Laurie is typing. Everyone else out and my bath water on so I've got plenty to do. Bing Crosby on and I'm trying to concentrate on that and this too - can't be done soooo

10.18.2012

October 18, 1939 Wednesday

October 18, 1939 Wednesday

The days fly by so fast I can't catch my breath, well almost. Dotty and I went shopping tonight and bought Noa's Birthday present. She wants something to put in her hope chest so we bought her 3 guest towels and 6 dish towels and a scouring pad also so she won't feel so grown-up a bunch of lollipops! We didn't get Ginny's present tonight but we'll get it tomorrow, I imagine. Dotty drove up after supper and I took her up to Mrs. Voses to have her coat shortened. We had to wait quite a while and well that's that for tonight -

10.17.2012

October 17, 1939 Tuesday

October 17, 1939 Tuesday

My bowling score still isn't very good! I believe I could be better- modest - that's me. My first score was 57 and the score of the second string was 78 (I believe). It's so cold today brrr. Home and read a bit and listened to the radio. I can't wait until Dotty has her luncheon Saturday because it should be fun. We're all going to get dressed up and act grownup - Such fun (Gee I can't write straight). I've got to buy some new shoes and things first though. Marit brought my dress to the cleaners so I'll have to wear that. No more for now --

10.16.2012

October 16, 1939 Monday

October 16, 1939 Monday

I forgot we had club supper tonight and our department had to wait on the tables and that means setting tables during noon hour. I forgot to take lunch with me so I sent out for a sandwich. We decorated the club room with orange and black Halloween decorations and we did a nice job. We had a very good club supper. Chicken in patty shells and mashed potatoes, peas and carrots and buns and coffee and jello. Good. We had election of officers and although we had games planned no one stayed to play them so home we went. Lux Radio Theatre "If I were King" Doug Fairbanks and Francis Dee.

October 15, 1939 Sunday

October 15, 1939 Sunday

I couldn't sleep this morning either because I had to get up and make breakfast for Marit, Ruthie, and Ginny. Marit and Ginny left right after they ate because Ginny had to get home as they're going on a trip (John and she) and Marit had to go to Church. I cleaned house and when Marit came home we made dinner: Pork Chops, potatoes, wax beans, and chocolate pudding with whipped cream. Ev called up after dinner and asked me if I'd like to go driving, so seeing as no one needed me, the kids were going to the movies and etc so I said yes and we drove all over the state and ended up at Foglemarks and had a hot turkey sandwich and then home. Mom and Pop came home and they've had a wonderful time.

10.14.2012

October 14, 1939 Saturday

October 14, 1939 Saturday

I don't like this having the folks away. I have to get up so early and once I'm up I can't get to sleep again. Of course I couldn't stay in bed because what with the milkman, the baker, the paper boy, etc etc all dropping in their just ain't no privacy. I made dinner for them: hamburg, peas, and potatoes, with Marit's help. I went to the movies with Ev and Ginny and Saw Madeleine Carroll and Fred MacMurray in "Honeymoon In Bali" and was it Good! Gee Ginny came home with me to supper and we had a birthday cake for her. She's 22 now. Times certainly flies. She stayed overnight with us.

10.13.2012

October 13, 1939 Friday

October 13, 1939 Friday

The dance tonight and Mom and Pop left for New York to see the World's Fair. I hope they have a wonderful time. I came home right after work and made supper, took my bath while Marit, the darling, pressed my blue chiffon gown. I got ready and Dot and Ed called for me and the three of us trooped in and met Olga's brother. Well - he's tall anyway. Ginny was at the dance with John and she looked so sweet. Dotty was stunning in her black taffeta. We went to the Paragon and after the dance to a diner in Hartford. I can't say I had such a wonderful time but oh well, it passed the evening.

10.12.2012

October 12, 1939 Thursday

October 12, 1939 Thursday

I'm going to the dance after all. Olga told me this morning that her brother would like to go so she arranged it and all I had to do was say yes or no. After long deliberation and with Dotty's persuasion I said yes. We're going with Dot and Ed. I'm not very enthusiastic about it but anyway it will be a dance. Mom and Pop are going to the Fair tomorrow so they're all excited. Noa had meeting Karin and Ginny couldn't come. We had a nice time but there were moments when I wished myself miles away and it's only natural because when you get 3 girls all in love together anyone who isn't feels rather on the outside. Home and so sleepy and tired - Ev drove us home - now about 12:00.

October 11, 1939 Wednesday

October 11, 1939 Wednesday

I don't think I've mentioned that Helen is in this week and Betty A. finally got her second week's vacation. We are swamped with work-darnit! I called up all the girls today to let them know Noa's having a meeting tomorrow.  Ginny has a date with John so she won't come. I was so glad to be spending tonight at home (of course it's so unusual) but I'm tired. Marit and I have just finished discussing Ginny and Eunice's approaching marriages. Marit said probably by next year Ginny will be having baby showers at this time. Well who knows? Perhaps there will be more than just Eunice and Ginny married-Noa perhaps?

October 10, 1939 Tuesday

October 10, 1939 Tuesday

Well we "Pin Tumblers" went bowling again tonight. My score this time was first 61 then 64. Of course not either of them are anywhere near good but I'm not worrying. It was so very hot today and I hurried home and got dressed and washed and had supper and rushed downtown again to meet Helena and we walked up to Kays. Marmee and Sue were there. Sue looking very natural in slacks and blouse and Marmee looked good too. Marion was just going as we came and Ginny and Edie dropped in after Choral Club. Ginny couldn't stay long as John was waiting for her. We had cake and coffee and had a nice time. Mart's brother drove us home.

October 9, 1939 Monday

October 9, 1939 Monday

Am now listening to "The Sisters" on Lux Radio Theatre with Irene Dune and David Niven. Good but of course the picture was better. Gosh my diet is going simply terrible. I've been eating so much today you'd think I'd starved over the weekend and I can only say regretfully the contrary! I've been reading Margaret Halsey's "With Malice Towards Some" and although I enjoy her very sarcastic remarks and clever comparisons I can't say I like her description of Norway! Naturally I'm prejudiced! Oh well, I know what I mean.

October 8, 1939 Sunday

October 8, 1939 Sunday

Another Sunday spent quietly and peacefully at home. I can't say it's been very exciting but then oh well, one can't have everything. I'm really wasting my time by just sitting at home reading and eating, yes I said eating, but I can't seem to find anything else to do. I'm getting rather discontented and unsatisfied again. If I could I think I'd just pack my bag and spend my life traveling but I suppose even that gets monotonous after a time. If I don't get a little fun soon I'll shrivel up and blow away out of sheer boredom!

October 7, 1939 Saturday

October 7, 1939 Saturday

Didn't sleep very late but of course later than usual. As there wasn't anything special going on today I just took a bath and then washed my hair. Ev called and we decided we might as well goto the movies. We decided we would met after supper and then go to the Arch Street Theatre to see Joan Blondell and Melvyn Douglas in "Good Girls go to Paris" also a Mr Moto picture. Good picture but GGGTP was a scream. First time I've bee in that theatre. It's nice. We got a glass a piece because it seems tonight was ladies glassware night. Wonderful isn't it! Home and had something to eat, ouch my diet!

October 6, 1939 Friday

October 6, 1939 Friday

At long last things are beginning to straighten out and there is once more hope for the future of the F.Y.P. Karin came down to supper and all went well. Noa called and we were to meet her in front of the South Church. She didn't seem too enthused over Karin's presence and my hopes dimmed. She called back and said she would get a ride up so Karl took K and I to Ginny's. Ginny and Ev there and both so cordial and lovely, it was wunnerful - Come Noa and she was sweet and things looked bright. Came Dotty all bubbling over with Love and Good spirit and things got better and better. Noa had to leave early but the rest of us stayed and had a good conversation about men and men and it was just the way it should be - I'm happier than anything. Oh bliss ---

October 5, 1939 Thursday

October 5, 1939 Thursday

Worked until 6:00 again. Went to the movies straight from work. Ginny waited for us at the Candy Box. Betty M. and I met her there and had a coke and a hot dog. Went to Strand and saw "These Glamour Girls" with Lana Turner, Anita Louise, Jane Bryson, Lew Ayres, Tom Brown, and dozens of others. It was amusing light entertainment. The other picture was "The Forgotten Women" with Sigrid Gurie also good. I like her. We went into Contaris and had another coke there, home where I had a light supper and now at 12:00 I'm ready for bed. All we hear over the radio is news of war, war, war! All we can do is hope and pray it will soon be over.

10.04.2012

October 4, 1939 Wednesday

October 4, 1939 Wednesday

Again I worked overtime. This has got to stop. I'm wearing myself out and I do mean it. I'm not losing any weight though darn it. Home and had supper and then spent the rest of the time listening to the radio, reading, and planning additions to my wardrobe. I only hope it will all turn out the way I planned it. Tomorrow I goto the movies with Ginny and that takes care of another evening. I'm not a bit sore from bowling but I had terrible cramps this afternoon probably from waiting in the rain for the bus last night!

10.03.2012

October 3, 1939 Tuesday

October 3, 1939 Tuesday

I went bowling with the girls in the office after work tonight. My first score 57, second 71. I know I'm going to be lame tomorrow, I can feel it already. We enjoyed ourselves and I guess we're going to keep it up. After supper Karl drove me out to Karin's. She's ill in be with her usual cramps also cold etc. She was glad to see me as was her mother or so it seemed. I heard all about the new house their moving into and etc etc. Seeing as she and Mom are still on the outs I guess she has to tell someone. Oh well. When we were alone I asked K. if she noticed anything funny about meeting last time and she said the girls acted strangely. I said it was because she hadn't written or come to meeting all summer and she said she was mad cause we didn't come down to see her and well she didn't care if she ever came to meeting again. She's coming up Friday for supper and then we go to meeting!!

P.S.- I don't know, mad as I get at her I guess 12-13 years is too much of a habit to break. I still have a warm place in my heart for her.

October 2, 1939 Monday

October 2, 1939 Monday

Blue Monday and that's just about what it starts out to be. Our dept. worked overtime and I mean worked! Mart Klopp told me today she almost called me up last night because she could have fixed a date for me. She didn't because she didn't think of me until too late but she's going to get more particulars and tell me. Soo maybe in the future. I won't hold my breath - Asked Noa up and we planned my wardrobe and gee it sounds good- If only. I can do it now. Well I'm about frozen stiff so I think I'd better creep into bed. Noa wore her new jersey dress and was simply stunning.

October 1, 1939 Sunday

October 1, 1939 Sunday

Everyone conspired against me this morning. The first thing I heard was the babbling of children's voices: Ruthie, Laurie, and Marit as they got ready to go to Sunday School. I closed my eyes and tried to bury my head in the pillow and what happens, they have a parade! The band playing it's loudest walked right by the window. I gave up and got up. Ev called later on and asked if I'd like to go for a ride because she could get the car. We went down the shore. Called Noa and then over to see Ginny. It started to pour on the way home but it was wonderful. I love to ride in the rain. It was fun just the two of us.

September Memoranda 1939

September Memoranda 1939

I don't know what to write on this page. I wish I knew what to do with me. I'm getting bored with just sitting around listening to everyone talk about their boyfriends and etc etc. Well what I need is a little excitement I guess and I'll leave it at that ---

At the end of this month I want to have lost enough weight so that I weigh about 130 lbs or less! I also want to have at least started my fall and winter wardrobe.

"Where there's a will there's a way!"

That will be my motto for this month.

September 30, 1939 Saturday

September 30, 1939 Saturday

Got up at 10:30 and of course seeing as I got sick yesterday I didn't feel altogether perfect today. I cleaned the house or part of the house. Mrs. Seibert is ill so we couldn't go down to the shore. I hope she recovers soon. It was nice to spend a day at home. I fixed the pictures in my album, a thing I've been putting off for ages. Marit went to the football game N.B. won and now she's gone to a "Y" dance. No wonder she's losing weight or is she? She got a new shirt and sweater (Blue teal and blue boxie) They fit me! Mr. and Mrs. Christopherson here.

September 29, 1939 Friday

September 29, 1939 Friday

Ginny came home with me to supper and Karl drove us to Dotty's. We were all at meeting except for Karin. We had such a very nice meeting. Ginny told the girls she is definitely going to get a diamond for Christmas. I can only hope and pray that he's the right one for her! I do so want little Ginny to be happy. Noa wore her new red corduroy dress and looked stunning as always. She told us Terry expects a baby in February and I think that's wonderful. Noa's Mother and Father took us home. Noa gave us little souvenirs from her vacation. I got a little red dog.

September 28, 1939 Thursday

September 28, 1939 Thursday

We're going to the FYP meetings on Friday starting this week so no meeting tonight. Mom asked me to go with her to Bingo tonight so I, having nothing else to do, decided to go. It was fun but not very exciting. Of course didn't win a thing and neither did Mom. Noa called up before I went and wanted to come up but seeing as I'd promised Mom and she was so insistent that I go of course it was Bingo for me. Mom looked so nice, she's a very good looking woman. I decided that at Bingo when I sat looking around at all the women.

September 27, 1939 Wednesday

September 27, 1939 Wednesday

It has been a rainy, dreary and short day too. Ann Marie's birthday today, she was eight years old and I sent her a dollar in a card. Home after work and settled myself in with a magazine until supper then finished my story after supper, listened to radio, didn't take long of course and finally got ready for bed and here I am. I'm getting so discouraged concerning my diet. Somehow when it gets colder I just have to eat I get such an enormous appetite but well where there's a will there's a way and that's my will I will get down to 125 lbs. I will.

Lillian Larsen Shower

September 26, 1939 Tuesday

Of course seeing as the shower was tonight it would rain! Olga came for me. She had Lydia with her and then we got Jane and went down there. Myrtle met us at the door and Betty A. introduced us. The front room was dark and crowded with people. Lots of them I didn't even know! There were 53 present. We waited ages for Lillian to appear and finally when she did we all shouted "surprise!". She took it quite well, I'm sure I would have passed out. Our department gave her an iron. She got loads of stuff. Ginny and Dot there in new dresses, they looked sweet. Got home about 11:45. A good time had by all - I think.

9.25.2012

September 25, 1939 Monday

September 25, 1939 Monday

The usual kind of an office day but after work I went with Ginny down to Conns where she had her new dress fitted. It's so sweet green with a bustle back. We then met Noa and Ev in the Candy Box and had a hot dog and coke and then went to the Strand where we saw Gary Cooper, Robt. Preston, Ray Milland and Susan Hayward in Beau Geste  also a Nancy Drew Staircase Mystery. Good show. Home and had supper and heard most of the Lux Radio Theatre play "She Married Her Boss" with Ginger Rogers and Geo. Brent - good. Mom told me Rachel had talked to Mrs. Jensen who said they are moving to Hartford in 2 weeks. Well thats that and I suppose Karin and I won't be seeing much of each other.

9.24.2012

September 24, 1939 Sunday

September 24, 1939 Sunday

Time changed today so we were all mixed up and it seemed so strange to have to get dark so early. I won't write about anything about the kind of a day it was or what we did because it was very usual. (Noa and Dick came down and Ev and I decorated Marcel's car while he and Jess were looking for oysters). I'm getting so I want to scream and I do mean scream when the girls start talking about their boyfriends: what they do, say, eat, and how they laugh, smile, make love, etc. and etc. Guess I need a man. But darnit I don't want to get settled down and stick altogether with one steady or do I? Strange when you don't know your own mind!

9.23.2012

September 23, 1939 Saturday

September 23, 1939 Saturday

Little Junior woke me up saying over and over again until he got an answer "Hello Ningie" etc. Mom came in and I told her about last night. Then Ruthie made breakfast (She loves it, it makes her feel so grown up) and Mom and I visited some more. Ev's mother called and said we would be going down the shore right after dinner so I got dressed and packed and cleaned up my room. Had dinner and Ev called for me and off we went. As usual just lolled around until supper time then we went up and got dressed, had supper, and went to the movies where we saw "The Rains Came" with Geo Brent, Myrna Loy, Brenda Joyce, and Tyrone Power - very good.

9.22.2012

September 22, 1939 Friday

September 22, 1939 Friday

I think I'll devote this entire page to our visit with Helen. Betty M. and I met downtown where Ann and Olga picked us up and we got Janie and Betty A. We then went to Hartford where it didn't take us long to find Helen's Apt. It's so cute. It makes me feel as if I'd like to get married myself maybe - someday. Course I smoked and then Helen offered us wine and I had two glasses, later on we had a rye highball and on top of that 2 glasses of beer and I didn't feel it any at all. Well almost not any. Naturally I got a trifle happy but I can't say I was dizzy. Helen looks good and we had such fun. Her husband came home and took our picture such fun!

September 21, 1939 Thursday

September 21, 1939 Thursday

We're going to see Helen tomorrow and I hope we have a few. When I came out of the office tonight who should be there to greet me but Karin! She had a gift for me a black sweater. It's adorable and I wore it to meeting tonight. I walked up to Birnbaums with her as she wanted to get something new. However she didn't find anything she liked. She didn't come to meeting tonight because she hasn't seen her mother for ages so she thought it best to stay home. I walked to meeting again and we sat and talked. Not having a boyfriend I should say I listened oh well single women blues hum. The girls gave me an adorable pink nightie and another birthday card, making fourteen -

9.20.2012

September 20, 1939 Wednesday

September 20, 1939 Wednesday

Counted my birthday cards. I got thirteen! Now if I were superstitious which I'm not etc etc - I feel nice and clean I've just taken my bath and I'm all ready for bed. I didn't do anything special today but anyway things seem to be looking up. I've got a new slant on things and I feel much sunnier and less morbid. Marit is lying in bed spelling out loud for a test tomorrow, Ruthy is fast asleep. Why is it children always drop off to sleep almost the minute they get into bed? I'll never know or will I? Well thats that.

My Birthday 21 Years

September 19, 1939 Tuesday

Today I am of age! 21 years! Today also is Moms and Dads 24th Anniversary! I rushed downtown straight after work and bought a card then took the bus out to the Flower Shop and bought a bunch of flowers for Mom. When I got home Eunice was here and Marit had baked an apple cake and Mom had supper ready. After supper Ann Marie brought her victrola down and we moved the table over in the kitchen and danced. It was fun. Rachel baked me a cake so we had coffee and cake. Then they gave me my presents. $3.00 from Marit, Hankies from Eunice and Ruthie and $3.00 from Mom and Pop. Laurie and I walked Eunice partly home. Brought my cake into the office today. Good but a little heavy. Did they kid me! I know they didn't mean it. Got loads of birthday cards.

9.18.2012

September 18, 1939 Monday

September 18, 1939 Monday

The Russell and Erwin Girls Club started up again. We had a supper and then our regular meeting. We're going to have a free dance in the middle of October just for the office employees and their escorts! Well it was nice having meeting again. I washed my hair and then with Marit's help we made a cake for the girls in my department. It looks good but of course you never know. I'm so excited about my birthday tomorrow you'd think I was going to be 12 instead of 21- Wow! I feel as happy as a lark and I don't care if I don't get a thing as long as it's a nice day and I feel wunnerful!

9.17.2012

September 17, 1939 Sunday

September 17, 1939 Sunday

Marit and I were the first ones up so we started breakfast. We were shortly joined by Laurie and Ruth and soon after Mom and then Pop. We ought to run a cafeteria it would make meals a much easier thing! Stayed home all day and read the funnies, wrote a little more of my letter, and managed to keep busy doing nothing. Life is very boring but at least it's not as horribly exciting as it must be over in Europe. Russia marched into Poland today and thats that! You might know she'd step in and get what she could now that Poland is so very near the end of her rope!

9.16.2012

September 16, 1939 Saturday

September 16, 1939 Saturday

Slept late and then after dinner Marit and Mary Vare and I walked downtown where we met Ginny. Her father drove the bunch of us down to the park where Marit and Mary joined their gang and Ginny and I got seats elsewhere. The game was good but not particularly exciting. It was so hot! I got sunburned! Imagine sunburned at a football game! The score was 18 to 7 N.B. won. Bristol scored in the last few minutes of play. Ginny and I went uptown to Contaris and had a coke. Betty M came in and we sat with her and had another coke. Home and supper and I started a letter to Jante Karen in Norway. I'll finish tomorrow.

9.15.2012

September 15, 1939 Friday

September 15, 1939 Friday

Ginny and I went to the movies after work tonight and saw "The Women" with Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, and Rosalind Russell. It was so very good and unusual as there wasn't a solitary male in the picture. Home and grabbed a bite to eat and when I say bite I mean half a bite. After I had washed up and gotten ready for bed Marit and I sat on our beds and talked about our first kisses and loves and etc. Very interesting but I wish I had some love interest at present. Oh well. Ginny and I are going to the football game between N.B. and Bristol tomorrow. First game of the season!

9.14.2012

September 14, 1939 Thursday

September 14, 1939 Thursday

Ginny had meeting tonight. I walked up alone because Noa is on her vacation and of course Karin isn't coming to meeting these days! We didn't do much outside of our regular gab session and Ginny tried on one of her new gowns for us. It's got a plaid skirt and a white blouse top. So very feminine and cute. I tried it on, I actually go into it size 12! I can hardly believe it! Dot and I left early because her father was going to take us home. We sat in the car in front of the office waiting for her father and talked about dating. When I finally got home I took a bath and then to bed. And thats that.

9.13.2012

September 13, 1939 Wednesday

September 13, 1939 Wednesday

I went to Eunice's for supper after work tonight. We had "Brown Betty" for dessert and I liked it so much I'm going to see if I can't make it some night at home! Eunice showed me quite a few new things she has for her hope chest. I saw a picture of the best man she's going to have when she marries. He's rather young looking but not bad. Oh well - We sat around and talked for awhile then her mother went out and we decided after awhile to go up to my house. We talked to the folks and Eunice left a short while later. We got a card from Karl. He's having fun but I miss him.

9.12.2012

September 12, 1939 Tuesday

September 12, 1939 Tuesday

I went downtown after work today and bought two more cups for my fiesta ware. I had some money left so I bought a couple of magazines and while I was at it I took my watch into the jewelers to have it fixed. It cost me $31.50 or it will cost me that much when it's ready. Money money money and all of it going out. I read a few stories and looked through my magazines for fall styles. I washed my pocketbook cover and now I'm ready for bed. Oh yes I finally got a letter written to Sue.

September 11, 1939 Monday

September 11, 1939 Monday

Let's see now what have I done today that I could write about.  Not much anyway.  I took out my winter clothes.  I knew I didn't have many left from last year's and I was right!  Well I cleaned out my closet and took a bath and washed my hair.  I can't think of anything else so maybe I didn't do anything else!  Life goes on very slowly with not much excitement but I'm glad we don't have the excitement they have in Europe what a terrible time they must be having over there!

9.10.2012

September 10, 1939 Sunday

September 10, 1939 Sunday

Canada declared war on Germany. I'm so tired of this war and war news! We woke up to find it was pouring. Had breakfast and went after the Sunday papers. We couldn't find much to amuse ourselves but we danced and read until it was dinnertime and then we sat around some more until we finally decided to get started. We drove around the beaches quite a bit and down to the docks and finally home. I had supper and then Mom asked me if I'd like to go upstairs to Rachel's and meet the Norwegian guests so I did. Now the urge to go to Norway has returned and I'm going to try so hard to go in a year or so. Well it's late now and I must get my beauty rest ---

September 9, 1939 Saturday

September 9, 1939 Saturday

I slept late this morning and had my breakfast in bed. Such Luxury! That is, of course, if you count a piece of Lemon Pie and a glass of milk breakfast. Ruthie brought it in to me on a tray and we breakfasted together. We didn't go down the shore until after dinner. We went over to see Jessie and then walked over to Curtis's store (alias Dunnings) had a double decker ice cream cone (ouch my figure!!) and sat on the beach in front of West Walker for awhile. Had supper and Ev and I went to Saybrook to see Hedy Lamarr and Robert Taylor in "Lady of the Tropics". Good and Hedy is beautiful! Also saw Ann Sheridan in "Indianapolis Speedway".

9.08.2012

September 8, 1939 Friday

September 8, 1939 Friday

Working an extra hour is getting to be a habit with me. We're not going down the shore tonight because Ev has to start working Saturday mornings starting tomorrow. I imagine we'll go right after dinner. Ginny and I went to see the "Wizard of Oz" with Judy Garland and Frank Morgan tonight after work. It was cute. Next week "The Women" is playing at the embassy and I'm anxious to see it. Marit made 2 lemon meringue pies today so I had a huge piece when I came home. Gee I'm glad she's back. Mother tells me the "Emeralds" lost again so I guess Karl will be home soon I hope!

September 7, 1939 Thursday

Surprise!!

September 7, 1939 Thursday

Again worked until six. I went home with Ginny to supper. Her mother is in Texas and has been for the last week or two. We got our own supper and then Ev and the two of us went to meeting at Noa's. Karin didn't show up at all. Eunice came to meeting and it was nice to see her once again. We sat in the bedroom and talked and when it came time to eat Noa shut the door and went out and fixed things herself. I didn't suspect a thing and it was a complete surprise when they opened the door and on the table was a birthday cake! For me! A little early but Noa is going on her vacation and she didn't want to go without being at my birthday party so she had it! She got me a rat trap with a poem on it to the effect that I was just a little girl and didn't know where I was at and that would prepare me in case I met a rat!

September 6, 1939 Wednesday

September 6, 1939 Wednesday

Worked until 6 tonight and then came home and ate a hearty supper - And I want to get slim! It's this cold weather - I get such an appetite. After supper I got a mag and apple and sat down to spend an evening reading. The phone rang and it was Noa so I asked her up and she came. She was mad at Dick because he wasn't impetuous enough and he arranged everything so clock like and etc so she told me all about it and then felt better. The kids came home and we had coffee and sat and joked and pretty soon we all were laughing away. Lawrence, Marit, and I walked Noa all the way to her door step. Got a card from Karl (the family did). So far so good. The Germans are expected to take Warsaw shortly - Darn em-

September 5, 1939 Tuesday

September 5, 1939 Tuesday

Here it is close to 1:00 A.M. and Marit and I wide awake - or are we? I've finished doing my nails and I've washed my hair and taken a bath and doctored Marit's sore. Marit was outside to hang up her bra and it was pitch dark and she fell over Lawrence's ice wagon and got a nasty cut on her thigh. It's very ridgy and rather deep. It doesn't take Marit long to start a little excitement! The infants start school again tomorrow and is Mom glad! Now she says her vacation will start. The war in Europe is still raging. There were 90 lives lost, as far as they can determine, in the sinking of the "Athenia". I never thought I would live to hear about a war between such civilized countries. I thought they had learned their lesson!

9.04.2012

September 4, 1939 Monday

Labor Day! Woke up with Ev's "Wake up Pumpkin" ringing in my ear. We got dressed and went down to a hash breakfast. News over the radio that the "Athenia" an English passenger ship with 1,400 persons aboard had been torpedoed by a German submarine without warning of any kind. Most of the passengers were picked up by passing boats. Germany is again playing dirty tricks! We didn't di much all day and Art took us home. We stopped at the Evans's for awhile. Marit came home a short while after I did. She gained a few lbs but she looks adorable. She's got a lovely tan and it's so good to have her back. Claudine was down. Marit bought me a cute little leather change purse and souvenirs for everyone else. Karl has left for Chicago - for the 3rd time!

9.03.2012

September 3, 1939 Sunday

September 3, 1939 Sunday

War has come! After many days of suspense the battle of nerves is over and a formal declaration has been made England first declared war on Germany who has continually refused to make peaceful negotiations and to remove her troops from Poland. France followed England's example and thats that! If only U.S. can keep out of the war! I think Hitler is the man most hated by the people the world over. Even school children, the younger ones, spit his name out disgustfully. England says she is not at war with the German people but with the present government! Art came down. He's going to stay over. Sat down by the beach for quite awhile tonight while Art and Ev pitched woo

September 2, 1939 Saturday

September 2, 1939 Saturday

Woke up to find it pouring so I went back to sleep and then woke up again to find the sun shining and seemingly all well with the world. I say seemingly because of course all is not well with the world. Things are getting blacker and blacker in Europe. Art came down and we persuaded him into going to the movies with us over in Saybrook. We saw "Winter Carnival" with Ann Sheridan and Richard Carlsen. Very good anyway I liked it. We then went home and Art left. Ev and I lay awake for quite some time talking. I tried to make Ev understand the way I felt about Karin but no use, she's definitely not even going to try to be friends.

September 1, 1939 Friday

September 1, 1939 Friday

As usual to work and also as usual got my pay check. I put $101.00 in the bank. I'm glad now I didn't take all my money with me on my vacation. I came home and took a bath and packed my clothes in preparation to go to the shore. Here I am rattling on about paltry doings when Europe is in a mess. War is very very close I'm afriad. Germany has already bombed several Polish cities and her troops have marched into Poland. England and France have warned Germany over and over again but to no avail! Ev, Jess, and I walked down the beach and talked. Jess is going to spend the weekend with Marcel's folks. Well, so to bed.

August Memoranda 1939

Another month is gone and it won't be long before I'm spending another New Years Eve alone and this time it will be alone what with Ginny having a steady and all! I don't think this month can be put down as an especially exciting one because my vacation wasn't so thrilling! I feel pretty lousy about the whole FYP mess though. It was strange seeing Karin who is usually so sure of herself quiet and etc. I've got to do something about it I can't help it even if Karin can be spiteful and mean and run all over me I can't do likewise. I feel as if I'd like to cry or something. Let's hope next month has a better ending for all --

August 31, 1939 Thursday

August 31, 1939 Thursday

I have been living half in fear and half in anticipation of today. The reason for this was of course that if Karin showed up how would the girls act? She was supposed to come to supper but didn't appear until later. She called first and said she would be at meeting and there was a slight hesitation in her voice but I didn't encourage her. When she came in Mom asked if she'd had supper and she said "no" so of course Mom fed her. Noa came first and she acted noticeably cool and I didn't know what to do. I made  the bench ready and Noa helped and then we all sat in the front room and tried to converse. It was pretty awful. Dot, Ev, and Ginny came and things were a little better. Karin noticed I am sure, that things were not as they had been. I gave them their souvenirs which they liked (Coty's rouge and lipstick) and when they left Noa called me into the bedroom and said that when I got out of the car last night Dick said, "There goes one swell girl! She'll make some man a wonderful wife! She's the kind that will be loyal and true blue!" Whew! Imagine - If I didn't feel so awful I'd feel good!

August 30, 1939 Wednesday

August 30, 1939 Wednesday

Half the week is over with and I feel as if I'd never been away on a vacation at all! Talking to Ginny today when we got the idea of going to N.Y. and having Andy (the boy she met in VT) and his friend take us to a night club and show us the sights! Well it's a nice idea anyway! I brought the pictures I took on the beach down to be developed. I won't get them until Tuesday. I read a little after supper and had decided to start getting ready for bed when the phone rang and Noa said she and Dick wanted to take me out riding. We drove around stopping at Dutchland Farms where Dick bought us ice cream. It was fun and they kept me laughing all the time I was with them.

August 29, 1939 Thursday

I was afraid I'd have to work overtime tonight but wonders of wonders I didn't! Helen should be in this week but it seems she's been in an automobile accident of some sort and although she's not seriously hurt I guess she won't be in this week. Told Dot Karin would probably be at meeting and her reaction was "We better get out a brass band!" I can't get over Dot of all people being sarcastic! I hope things go alright Thursday night but there bound to be strained. Noa called and I told her and she agreed that we'd make the best of it. I'm really sorry because although I'm afraid to admit it I was rather glad to see Karin again! I washed my hair and did my nails to take up time tonight! It's so cold today 60 degrees this morning brrr

August 28, 1939 Monday

August 28, 1939 Monday

It wasn't bad getting back to work again at all - in fact it was a relief! Ginny had pictures to show me of the Lake in VT and she let me read a letter one of the boys she met up there sent her wow! Seems he likes her (to put it mildly). Went to the movies after work with Betty Miller, Libs Rohrberg, and Cynthia Sellanell, and Ginny. We saw "The Old Maid" with Bette Davis who was superb all Miriam Hopkins, George Brent, and Jane Bryan who is a darling reminds me of Ginny. Ginny told me tonight she went out riding Friday night with Steve and a boyfriend if I'd been home - well that young lady is certainly getting around.

August 27, 1939 Sunday

August 27, 1939 Sunday

I might have known why things have seemed so wrong these last couple of days! I woke up sick this morning! We didn't do anything at all today. I read a little and Jess came over and we sat in the sun for awhile but somehow no one felt very energetic for which I thanked my lucky stars. Art came down about 8:00 and took us home. It struck me as we were riding along that only a few days ago I was riding the same road with Ginny and John! Nice to have girl friends with my boy friends isn't it Ingrid? Oh well while there's life there's hope.

August 26, 1939 Saturday

Ev had to use all her strength to awaken me this morning. I couldn't imagine whatever made me so sleepy. We went through the Saturday morning routine. Art came down before dinner and we went down to the beach. I didn't feel like doing anything but finally we went swimming and that made me feel a little better. After dinner we drove over to Dunnings and along the beach. I couldn't wait until it was time for us to go to the movies. Finally the time came and we went to Madison where we saw Charles Beyer and Irene Dunne in "When Tomorrow Comes" Good -

August 25, 1939 Friday

August 25, 1939 Friday

Spent the day at home giving everybody the deuce because the house was such a mess. Poor Ruthy but she does throw everything around so! I wish we could move but I'm afraid that's out of the question for quite awhile yet. The house is very badly in need of wall papering and painting. Oh well - Mrs. Quibert called this noon to say we were going down the shore right after supper. Ev called up when she got home and I got packed and they came after me and off we went. Jess came over and the three of us went riding to Madison where we went to a Drug store and had a soda Ev bought a cute pitcher for her mother and then to bed -

August 24, 1939 Thursday

August 24, 1939 Thursday

Ginny and I were awakened by an awfully loud banging on the front door. I looked at Ginny and Ginny looked at me. I put on my house coat and made no move to go downstairs. Ginny started to get dressed. The banging stopped, the dog quieted down and I picked up my courage and went downstairs where I proceeded to open the windows. The knocking started again and I edged my way to the door. It was only a girl from across the street and all she wanted to know was if we had a certain party in the house that was wanted on the phone - we hadn't - that's that. Played croquet and lazed around. Ginny's John came after supper and we sat around for quite a while and then he took  us home. Got in 11:30. He's rather nice, not very tall, thinning hair, but attractive in a nice way.

August 23, 1939 Wednesday

August 23, 1939 Wednesday

Slept until I couldn't sleep any more and then we went downstairs to make breakfast. Had bacon and eggs, coffee and toast. Whee -sat around talking and I got my camera out and took pictures and we went swimming. Stayed down there for quite awhile and then back to the cottage and started supper. Art and Ev came in the midst of our preparations. Jess came over after supper and we all went down to the beach while Ev and Art went swimming. Art drove us over to Dummings for cigarettes and Ivar was over there we talked to him for awhile. Back and had refreshments. Everybody left and we sat here  enjoying ourselves when who should come bouncing in but Karin and a new boyfriend.

August 22, 1939 Tuesday

August 22, 1939 Tuesday

I got packed again and Ginny called and said we would go right after lunch 1:00. She didn't get here until after 2:00 but I didn't mind. Clarence and Gert took us down. We went swimming and Ginny and I made supper. It was fun. After supper we sat around and talked and later on had a lunch. G. and C. went home around 10:30 and we went out to see them off and then noticed the beautiful northern lights. Well came back into the house and sat listening to the radio until we went to bed and there continued talking. I never laugh as much as when I'm with Ginny she's so cute.

August 21, 1939 Monday

August 21, 1939 Monday

Ginny called me up at 11:30 and I was still in bed. We arranged to meet at 4:00. I couldn't seem to get started but finally I did. We went into Contaris where we sat and talked about our vacations until Libs and Betty Mills came. Sat and gabbed some more and then we decided to go. Ginny said their cottage wasn't rented so I suggested the two of us going down. She thought it would be a good idea and said she would call me later and she did saying Clarence and Gert would take us down and Brindy the dog would stay with us. We'll come home Thursday. It is now 11:00 AM and I'm busy ironing a sopping wet dress! Just washed my hair and guess I won't get to bed before two. Well I'll sleep tomorrow.

August 20, 1939 Sunday

This morning we slept a little later than usual but not much. We packed and went to Child's for breakfast and then pack and checked out. Our room rent for the week being only ten dollars. We checked our bags there and went out walking. Had lunch at the Automat and then went up to the roof at Rockefeller Center. We walked some more and finally went over to Central Park and sat until train time approached. Got our bags and took the bus to the station. The train was in and we got right on. We were so tired! Took a taxi from N.B. stopping place - home - Mrs. Vichstrom here nice to be home again.

August 19, 1939 Saturday

August 19, 1939 Saturday

Up early this AM but then we generally are. Breakfast in Childs and stopped at Lafes and bought a box lunch to take with us to the fair. It started to rain and continued raining all day long. Went into the House of Jewels and the Kodak place also Westinghouse, Belgium, Norway again, and many others. Ate our lunch in Food North or was it Libbys? Yes Libbys. Went home early because of the rain. Had a sandwich and coffee in Lofts and then to the Hotel where we sat and listened to the radio and gabbed far into the night. It's the first jam session we've had and it was fun. Well tomorrow we go home and I'm glad - actually thrilled!! I'm cured of N.Y. and I want my mamma! I can hardly wait I feel as if I've been gone years.

August 18, 1939 Friday

August 18, 1939 Friday

Breakfast in Childs, took the bus and went to Macys where we went over the store. It's O.K. Fox's, I think, is as nice. Bought a few souvenirs there. Had lunch at the Macy's Tearoom. We walked along 5th Ave and went into St. Patrick's Cathedral. Sat there for awhile and then went into the Museum of Modern Art. Saw an old movie there with Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood (1922). I can't remember half of the things we did. We had supper at the Automat. Later we went to the Planetarium and saw and heard a lecture on comets and falling stars. Walked home and stopped at Lofts for a Sundae. Got a letter from Ginny and she's having a wonderful time.

8.17.2012

August 17, 1939 Thursday

August 17, 1939 Thursday

Again breakfast in Childs and subway to the Fair. When we got there we immediately headed for General Motors Exhibit. We had to wait in line 2 hours before we got in and while waiting got acquainted with an elderly couple from California and their cousin from N.Y. The Exhibit was worth waiting for and we went with these people to other exhibits including General Electric, The Glass Works, Bordens, Aviation Building and others. We bought our own lunch of hot dog and coke and didn't eat supper until about 9:00. Left the people about 8:00 PM and went into the Russian and Japanese building. Also saw Puppet show with Charlie McCarthy etc. Had a club sandwich and milk in Krafts and then decided to go home. Again we got the right subways - we're getting to be experts!

8.16.2012

August 16, 1939 Wednesday

August 16, 1939 Wednesday

It didn't look very promising this morning and sure enough just after we left Childs, where we breakfasted, it started to rain. However, we decided to go to the Fair anyway so off we went in the subway. I can't remember half of the buildings we went into. We went into the Coty's building and the medicine building and dozens of others. We lunched on hamburg and coke and tramped around some more. We walked over to the Amusement Area where we had supper at a cafeteria and then we went to see Billy Roses Aquacade starring Eleanor Holm and Johnny Wiesmuller. It was marvelous and the divers magnificent. That was over about 9:40 so we decided to go home and wonders of wonders we got the right subway this time!

8.15.2012

August 15, 1939 Tuesday

August 15, 1939 Tuesday

Got up rather late, breakfasted in Childs and walked over to the Central Park Zoo where we visited the animals. Then we went over to Rockerfeller Center and went through the combined Radio City Tour. That is the NBC tour - Television and all. Now I can say I've been in television. We had a sandwich in Liggits and from there to the Music Hall where we saw Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, and Kay Francis in "In Name Only". Of course we also saw the Rockettes and stage show. Lets see after that we got our tickets to Katherine Hepburn play "Philadelphia Story" and then we went to the Automat for supper. Shopping in the 5 and 10 cent store. Got a few souvenirs. My money is giving out I've got to go easy. Saw the play - very good and K.H. is marvelous. Walked home and wrote postcards and took shower and now it's somewhere around 3:00 AM and we're going to the fair tomorrow-

8.14.2012

August 14, 1939 Monday

August 14, 1939 Monday

Got up at 8:00 - got dressed and finally got out and we went to Childs for breakfast. Then back to the hotel and got ready to go to the Fair. We took the Subway and got their nice and easy for 5 cents. We went into the Brazilian building first and from there took on practically all the countries. We lunched on a hamburg, a hotdog and coke. Went to the Norwegian building of course and bought some cards there to send to the folks. We had supper of meatballs-tomatosauce, peas and mashed potatoes ish! No good. We went up into the Perisphere which was really awe inspiring and then we saw the Lagoon of Nations all colored and lit up breathlessly beautiful! The Fair was all lit up and the post cards don't do it justice - It's grand! It got rather late and we were so tired so we got on a Subway to go home and got off at the wrong stop and had to take a another one and got out at Grand Central and walked 21 blocks to Hotel, took shower and now in bed. The girls are asleep and I'm going to I hope. Gee I'm tired and my legs ache so--

Vacation - The Big Day Arrives

August 13, 1939 Sunday

I slept late this morning I really needed to sleep. Had dinner late and fussed around doing my nails, taking a bath and finally getting ready. Mart called and said they would meet me at 4:20 at the R.R. Arcade - Sooo Lawrence and Mikey carried my luggage down for me and we got our tickets and got on the bus for Berlin and a few minutes later on the train and on the way to New York. When the train stopped at Grand Central I secured a porter and told him to put us in a taxi which he did and then to the Barbizon where we filled out all sorts of cards and finally got in to our rooms. So cute mini in pinkish and this blue radio and we got a bath and a shower. It rained but cleared up by the time we went out. Walked around and stopped at Childs for fruit salad and milk. Now I'm going to take a shower. Gee it's hot!

August 12, 1939 Saturday

August 12, 1939 Saturday

Explanation. I'm writing this on Sunday in the Hotel Room and we have ink but no pen -- Didn't sleep very late and so I did a little more packing and etc. Mike came down from the farm to see Lawrence. He's going to stay until Monday I guess. Went shopping and bought a new umbrella, also dark sunglasses, rouge and etc. Home and had supper and then Mom went downtown and I washed my hair. Rachel came down and I talked to her and she's going to let me take a bag to put my shoes in. I fixed my pearls and finally got to bed and so excited I couldn't sleep.
